Live Entertainment Industry Declares: December 26 Official Day to See a Live Show
Pasadena, CA. – December 13, 2016. Performing arts centers, promoters, producers, sports teams and more from across the country are once again joining together to declare December 26 — Show Day. This is a live entertainment industry initiative to proclaim the 26th the day to take family, friends and loved ones to a live event.
Serving as the official Show Day Grand Marshal for 2016 is actor, author and the President of Actors’ Equity Association, Kate Shindle. “I’m thrilled to be named Grand Marshal for Show Day,” says Shindle. “My life is so deeply rooted in Iive theatre in particular, and it’s why I think Show Day is just such an amazing idea. I’m a fan of going to see shows all the time but, I think it’s great to have a dedicated day to get the family or a group of friends together and go out and see something you’ve never seen before.”
Grand Marshal Kate Shindle and Fun Home
Kate Shindle is now starring as Alison in the hit show Fun Home on tour across the country (funhomebroadway.com/tour.php) and will officially open the eagerly anticipated return of the Curran in San Francisco in January 2017. She is a former Miss America, longtime activist, author of Being Miss America: Behind the Rhinestone Curtain and president of the labor union that works to increase pay and benefits for the 50,000 actors and stage managers in the U.S.
Based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir, Fun Home introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood that connect with her in surprising new ways. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
Fun Home was the event of the 2015 Broadway season, receiving raves from critics and audiences alike, winning five 2015 Tony Awards including Best Musical and making history along the way as the first show written exclusively by women to win theater’s highest achievement. It was named to all of the major top 10 lists including The New York Times, Associated Press, New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly, BuzzFeed, The Daily Beast, Chicago Tribune, The Hollywood Reporter and more.
Fun Home features music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and direction by Sam Gold, whose work on this production earned them Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book and Best Direction. With this win, Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori also made history by becoming the first female writing team to be awarded the Best Score Tony Award.
