Sketch comedy group Millennial Fresh returns for two shows
SARASOTA, FL – Sketch comedy group Millennial Fresh returns for two performances in Sarasota on April 23 and May 1. Featuring some Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe artists and directed by the company manager, the group was formed in December of 2015 by Joey James and Natasha Samreny. They wanted to create a comedic voice in the area with people their own age. They started writing, auditioning and, soon, Millennial Fresh was born.
The 90-minute revue presents original comedic scenes on marriage, Skyping with extended family, unwanted visitors, advice from elders, astrology, Florida drivers, pregnancy, and sexuality.
Company members are Joey James (director), Ariel Blue, Earley Dean, Satchel Dennis, Naquila Gregory, Kathryn Parks, Natasha Samreny, and Matthew Walker. This diverse group works to create together, developing material from a mix of cultural, gender-preference and age-influenced perspectives.
“This show is different because it explores comedy from our current generation’s perspective,” explains James. “We question what we’re told we should be and laugh at who we really are. Everything is relatable.”
“The most satisfying aspect of my job is seeing talented young artists develop their skills, gain confidence and achieve professional success,” added WBTT executive director Julie Leach. “We are committed to providing mentorship, artist development, and a stage through our Young Artist Program and our support of the up-and-coming talents in Millennial Fresh. We feel strongly about investing in the performers who work with us in order to further their performance and career opportunities.”
Shows take place on Sunday, April 23 and Monday, May 1 at 8 p.m. at the Westcoast Black Theatre (1646 10th Way, Sarasota). Tickets are $30/adults, $15/students (with valid ID). Call the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe box office at (941) 366-1505 or go to westcoastblacktheatre.org.
