Dear Friends of OONY,

Since its inception in 1967, The Opera Orchestra of New York has had a profound impact on the musical and cultural vitality of New York City. Long noted for important discoveries of repertoire and singers, each performance is a “must attend” event for opera-lovers from around the globe fans.

Opera is first and foremost about the voice.

In an era where the focus in many opera houses has moved toward the visual, Maestro Eve Queler continues to present operas the way they were meant to be “heard”, by matching the best voice for each role, thereby enabling all the drama, excitement, and pathos to be communicated through the music and the voice. This creates an immediate bond between the singer and audience resulting in that rare, visceral response we all have come to love at the opera. This kind of operatic fervor was witnessed during our 2014 performance of Roberto Devereux featuring Mariella Devia.

“Ms. Devia was greeted as a conquering heroine on Thursday, with an ovation before she had sung a note, a louder one after her first aria and a tumultuous reception at the end, spurred by her final note, a clear high D….With a veteran on the podium and a venerable star, this was opera as old-time religion, and the congregation ate it up.” – Zachary Woolfe, New York Times

On Wednesday, May 4, 2016 OONY will continue in its proud tradition with an extraordinary evening of bel canto featuring one of the greatest voices of our time, soprano Angela Meade, supported by exciting rising young artists including the vibrant young Serbian bass, Sava Vemic. Details will follow shortly.

You have been there for us in the past and for that we are extremely appreciative. More than ever, OONY needs your support to continue to bring you the high quality opera-in-concert performances that our audiences have come to expect: magical evenings featuring unique works, sung by today’s biggest stars, supported by the most promising new voices on the operatic horizon. These are the qualities and experiences that have kept us on New York City’s cultural map for almost five decades.

As OONY approaches its Golden Anniversary season (2017-18), we ask you to generously contribute today by making a tax-deductible gift which will preserve Maestro Queler’s legacy for many years to come. If you have already made your year-end gift, we thank you!
