SARASOTA COUNTY – Media are invited to a naming celebration for Senator Bob Johnson’s Landing, a new 7-acre park located along the Myakka River in Venice. Sarasota County purchased the land in 2009 in order to provide opportunities for a range of outdoor recreation including canoe/kayak launching, nature trails, picnicking, fishing and rowing.
WHAT: Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources will host a celebration to honor Sen. Bob Johnson for his contributions to the community with a park in his name.
WHO: Sen. Bob Johnson, a lifelong Sarasota County resident who served in the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate for a total of 16 years, will be the guest of honor.
County Commissioners Charles Hines and Christine Robinson are also scheduled to speak, and representatives from the Sarasota County Park and Advisory Council and Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources staff will be available for interview opportunities.
WHEN: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014.
WHERE: 9083 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL 24293.
WHY: Sen. Johnson was instrumental in protecting the natural beauty of Sarasota County. While serving in the Florida State Legislature in 1985, he wrote legislation that designated the Myakka as a “Florida Wild and Scenic River,” providing for preservation and management of a 34-mile portion of the river within Sarasota County that includes the new park.
When completed, Sen. Bob Johnson’s Landing will provide increased recreational opportunities for Sarasota County residents.
