Atglen, PA—Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., is proud to announce the release of Timeless: Photographs by Kamoingea book that chronicles the history, mission, and spirit of Kamoinge—the oldest collaborative group of photographers in the nation—and brings light to an aspect of Civil Rights that receives little attention: artistic equality.Through 280+ stunning photos and thoughts from 30 members, Timeless tells the story of Kamoinge, whose name means “a group of people acting together” in the Gikuyu language of Kenya, in their pursuit of gaining entrance to venues that were previously inaccessible to black photographers. Though unified in their cause, images by artists in the group clearly show the individual voices and styles of Kamoinge members, who include many of the nation’s most acclaimed photographers: Louis Draper, Albert Fennar, Herbert Randall, Anthony Barboza, Herb Robinson, Radcliffe Roye, and more. This comprehensive collection is valuable for addressing an underrepresented part of art history and understanding how the group worked together to change the perception of black photographers. But Timeless is also a tool for those who study the art of photography. The images included show a wide variety of photographic styles: abstracts, landscapes, street photography, and portraits taken in locations and settings the world over. Kamoinge continues to photograph, as well as to mentor others, and commemorates its 50th anniversary with this compendium.

Timeless is the most expansive Kamoinge collection to date, as we share our timeless vision of our members, from the collective’s founders to the young lions who are the next generation,” said Anthony Barboza, Kamoinge president. “We present our treasures to the global community to demonstrate our American experience, from our mind, eyes, passion and collective spirit.”
