Sarasota Contemporary Dance Residency with Guest Artists

April 22-25, 2016

Sarasota Contemporary Dance’s 10th season has offered a variety of residencies continuing its philosophy of providing unparalleled opportunities to dancers and choreographers. For its upcoming last production of the season, Evolving/Evolving June 2-5, at the Jane B. Cook Theater, they have invited past SCD emerging choreographers to restage some of the company’s past favorites. Crystal Edwards and Sarah Caldabaugh originally set Run in 2009 while Sarah Caldabaugh was a company member. Edwards and Caldabaugh will be in Sarasota April 22-25, to reset “a fearless athletic duet performed by two women”, says Artistic Director Leymis Bolaños Wilmott.

Edwards describes the creative process of Run, “We dared to push our bodies beyond what we thought possible to highlight the physical strength and courage that women should feel proud to claim as their own.”

Caldabaugh is excited to return to the dance world and set Run, which she created with Edwards while they were dance majors at the University of Florida. “Coming back as a previous company member to SCD to reset Run is both nostalgic and refreshing. I’m excited to watch the piece transform on the current company members and hope to see where they ‘run’ with it after taking a step away from my own dancing career,” says Caldabaugh.

During their residency there will be two master classes open to the community on Friday, April 22 and Monday, April 25 at 10am. These classes will provide a glimpse of the strength and endurance needed to perform works by Edwards and Caldabaugh. Get ready to sweat, jump, and be upside down. These classes are also additional offerings SCD will be providing during National Dance Week along with their fundraiser at Kahwa Coffee, April 23-30, in downtown Sarasota, (1487 2nd Street in downtown Sarasota- adjacent to the Urbanite Theater and across the street from Whole Foods).
