Sarasota Contemporary Dance Entices its Audience to Stick Around Town with Guest Choreographer/Dancer Maria Bauman, and its popular “In the Round” Summer Showcase

Sarasota’s “season” has come and gone, but Sarasota Contemporary Dance is still in full force at its light and bright Boulevard of the Arts studio to entertain culture hungry summer audiences with two shows in July. The first is by NYC resident Maria Bauman, who will present her evening length solo (re)Source. The second is SCD’s annual In The Round Series, an incubation platform for dance makers in the earlier stages of their choreographic careers.

Maria Bauman- (re) Source: Fri. July 19 @ 7:00pm; Sat. July 20 @ 2:00pm

In The Round: Fri. July 26th @ 7:00pm; Sat. July 27th @ 2:00pm

Tickets: $20

Location: SCD Home Studio
1400 Blvd of the Arts, Ste 300
Sarasota, FL 34236

Both performances are part of the SCD In Studio Showcase Series, conceived by SCD Artistic Director, Leymis Bolaños Wilmott. The program offers a rare experience for both choreographers and the Sarasota community to be a part of works in their birthing stages, as well as a unique platform for more seasoned dance makers to present new and exciting work in an intimate setting.

A guest teacher for SCD’s second summer intensive, Maria Bauman’s (re)Source, an investigation-in-process, is an evening-length live danced and spoken artwork performed inside an audience-co-created installation which Bauman-Morales designed with scenic assistance from interdisciplinary artist Nontsikelelo Mutiti. NY based Bauman Morales (who is originally from Florida) is an award winning, multi-disciplinary artist and community organizer. With her company, MBDance (founded in 2007), she presents work that centers the non-linear and linear stories and bodies of queer people of color. She is currently Artist in Residence at Brooklyn Arts Exchange.

“In the Round” is an intimate performance produced and presented by Sarasota Contemporary Dance company members joined by two selected choreographers from the July summer dance intensive. Participants from the SCD summer program join the SCD company dancers on stage for an always entertaining program by budding contemporary choreographers. This program also features the unique audience feedback integration based on the Liz Lerman Critical Response Process (CRP).
