SAM SMITH BECOMES FIRST UK MALE ARTIST TO HAVE
DEBUT SINGLE HIT #1 AT AAA, AC AND POP RADIO FORMATS
“STAY WITH ME” REMAINS #1 SONG ON SPOTIFY FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE WEEK
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Sam Smith’s record-breaking streak continues, as he becomes the first UK male artist to ever to have his debut single, “Stay With Me,” reach #1 at AAA, AC and Pop radio. The gospel-induced soul ballad is being equally adored across seven radio formats in the U.S., and has been certified three times platinum. “Stay With Me” remains the #1 song on Spotify for three consecutive weeks while Smith is the #1 artist on the platform.
According to Capitol Music Group Chairman Steve Barnett, “Sam’s feat is further validation of what all of us at Capitol have known since first hearing the voice and songs of this amazing new artist: That Sam’s artistry would shatter the boundaries that too often pigeonhole artists, and his appeal wouldn’t be limited to any one audience or radio format. Fans are embracing “Stay With Me” as a classic, and we couldn’t be happier for Sam.”
Smith initially made U.S. pop music history with his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, selling more copies in its first week of release than any other UK male artist in the history of Soundscan. The album remains on the Billboard 200 chart in the Top 10, eight weeks after its release.
The British sensation will make his way back to the States for a fall North American tour. This run has completely sold out, including two shows at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, two shows in New York City and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
The “MTV Artist to Watch” alum is nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards in the categories of “Best Male” and “Artist To Watch,” set to broadcast live onSunday, August 24th at 9pm ET/PT. Meanwhile, his video for new single “I’m Not The Only One” is approaching four million views in less than two weeks.
