ARKELLS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM MORNING REPORT OUT AUGUST 5
PREMIERE FIRST SINGLE “PRIVATE SCHOOL” ON THE FADER
APPEARANCES AT BONNAROO, LOLLAPALOOZA, FIREFLY AND WAYHOME FESTIVALS
Rock quintet Arkells‘ highly anticipated new album, Morning Report, will be released on August 5 on Last Gang Records/eOne in the U.S. and Universal Music Canada. Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, My Morning Jacket), Tony Hoffer (Beck, M83), Brian West (Sia, AWOLNATION), and Gus van Go (The Stills, Wintersleep). This is the band’s fourth album and first on Last Gang Records for the U.S. The record showcases the intuitive interaction between frontman Max Kerman and Mike DeAngelis’ intertwining guitars, Nick Dika’s urgent basslines, Anthony Carone’s dulcet keys, and Tim Oxford’s lockstep drumming. Pre-order the album at iTunes.
The new video for the album’s first single, “Private School” is premiering today on
The FADER. Watch it HERE.
Morning Report is Arkells’ first record since 2014’s High Noon, which landed at #1 on the Canadian iTunes chart and earned the band a certified Gold record (Canada) and 2015 JUNO Awards for Best Group and Best Rock Album. Arkells earned their place as the most played band at alt-rock radio in Canada in 2015.
Morning Report is comprised of click-tracked rhythms, subliminal samples, and electronic pulses – threaded together with horns and strings into a richly-textured mix which more readily recalls montage and collage approaches of Hip-Hop beatmakers than the direct plug-in-and-play attack of a live rock band. Lyrically, however, Kerman’s songwriting hits even closer to home on this album.
“Many of the songs are inspired by friends and family: I have a lot of interesting characters in my life and take a lot of joy in being able to write about them,” Kerman admits. “A lot of songs start from what happened the night before – that’s where the title comes from: friends who text the next day and demand ‘Give me the morning report!'” Max continues, “this is our weirdest, funniest, saddest record yet, and therefore, our most honest one, too.”
