RiffTrax Live: Mothra Comes to Life From the Belcourt Theatre for a Hilarious Two-Night Event in Cinemas Nationwide

Fathom Events and RiffTrax Longstanding Partnership Continues with Toho’s Classic Creature Feature on August 18 and 23

DENVER – July 6, 2016 – Hide your sweaters! That giant Kaijū Lepidoptera known as “Mothra” is coming back to the big screen this August. Fresh from their landmark “RiffTrax Live: MST3K Reunion Show,” the men of RiffTrax — Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett – are back to roast one of the most beloved (and bizarre) of the Japanese monster classics, the 1961 film “Mothra,” in “RiffTrax Live: Mothra.” This event, from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee, will be broadcast live to movie theaters across the country on Thursday, August 18 at 8:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. CT and tape delayed to 7:00 p.m. MT / 8:00 p.m. PT, with an encore showing on Tuesday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Tickets for “RiffTrax Live: Mothra” can be purchased online by visiting www.FathomEvents.com or at participating theater box offices. Fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in more than 550 select movie theaters through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network. For a complete list of theater locations visit the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).

Michael J. Nelson of RiffTrax said, “‘Mothra’ has always been on our ‘we have to do this’ list, so I’m excited we finally got our hands on it. Aside from my being a fan of giant larvae, the movie itself is goofy and really fun to look at. It’s perfect for us.”

Just as “Gamera” became one of MST3K’s most beloved series, “Mothra” promises to be an instant RiffTrax classic. It tells the incredibly peculiar story of a group of explorers who travel to a remote island, kidnap two tiny women, incite the wrath of a giant larvae which then swims the ocean, cocoons itself in downtown Tokyo, emerges as the titular “Mothra” and destroys everything in its path. Yes, it’s a tale as old as time, but RiffTrax brings out its best by adding comical, contemporary commentary to this classic!

“Coming off the success of the MST3K reunion event, interest in RiffTrax’s live events is at an all-time high,” Fathom Events CEO John Rubey said. “Those that came out for the reunion and new fans nationwide are in for another treat with ‘Mothra.’”

“Mothra” will be the 21st RiffTrax title for Fathom Events since the start of their partnership in 2009. Some of the most popular titles in the RiffTrax Live lineup include “Starship Troopers,” “Manos: The Hands of Fate,” “Night of the Living Dead” and “Anaconda.”

***Editor Note: Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett will be available for select interviews.
