Place another feather in the cap of the City of Bradenton for hosting the inaugural Skyway Film Festival June 12, 13, and 14, 2015. The venue for the Festival was the beautiful Manatee Performing Arts Center along Bradenton’s Riverwalk. The entire Skyway Film Festival Team, including all Staff Members and Advisors did a tremendous job in putting the Inaugural Festival together. Countless hours of planning, coordination and execution resulted in three seamless days of entertaining full length films, short films, and documentaries shot and produced locally and internationally. At the Festival, people had the opportunity to see movies of mostly first time directors. The actors, directors and cinematographers present at the festival were accessible, engaging, and eager to answer questions about their roles, film-making techniques, and ideas from which their scripts evolved. Additionally, the Festival hosted discussion groups with film industry leaders and special guests to talk about issues such as financing films, branding a film to make it a must-see, and closing the gender gap in film making.
The six films I viewed over the three days were innovative, poignant, quirky, complicated, simple, informative, thought-provoking, and just plain fun.
“IMBA Means Sing” showcased three children and their year long experience as part of the African Children’s Choir, learning to sing and dance, and then touring Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. by bus. Coming from the slums of Uganda, the choir children perform their songs and dances to audiences to raise money to continue their education when they return to Uganda.
It was an inspiring and touching film that I was sorry to see end.
“Chasing Junior Tate” was an exciting film that told the story of a bounty hunter’s attempts to bring a criminal, Junior Tate, from Mexico back to Florida. Tate had allegedly stolen diamonds from a gangster before being jailed in Mexico. There were many twists and turns in the plot, which kept viewers wondering what would happen next.
The movie “Walt Before Disney” is based on the book by Timothy S. Susanna. The movie shows Walt Disney as a child on a farm in Kansas, always drawing. Walt dropped out of school at sixteen. Some years later he started his own animation company producing “Laugh-O-Grams.” Walt’s business failed when he could not pay his bills, because his creditors could not pay their bills to him. Walt went to Los Angeles to try to work with the movie studios. He hired a number of amazingly talented animators, but they eventually left him when he did not have enough money to pay them. The film shows how Walt decided to create a new animated character, a mouse. Walt, and a few loyal employees that remained with him, produced the movie “Plane Crazy,” starring Mickey Mouse. It was a success, and as they say, “the rest is history.”
