Sotto Voce
Sotto Voce [sot-oh voh-chee] is an Italian musical term: an English translation would be “speaking or singing in a soft manner – with purpose”. A very strong person can speak softly and everyone jumps, and is usually seen in movies and plays as the steel fist in a velvet glove. But what of those who are not powerful and who are in no position to demand anything? Being without power is not the same as being weak: people that are very powerful, or important, or intelligent can find themselves in a situation where they can only speak sotto voce.
The Asolo Repertory Theatre’s new production, directed by Melissa Kievman, of Sotto Voce, is a play about just those kinds of people. The action takes place in New York and Cuba in the year 2000 and in the waters off the coast of Cuba and Florida in 1939, just before the beginning of World War II.
We in Sarasota are very lucky to be seeing this work by Pulitzer Prize and Greenfield Prize-winner Nilo Cruz. It premiered last year in New York and had a short run in Miami before this production at the Historic Asolo Theatre. Mr. Cruz’ Anna in the Tropics was seen in St. Petersburg in 2004, also to great acclaim.
In Sotto Voce there is a dual plot line. The one on the surface is that of Saquiel (Marcel Mascaro), a Cuban student / writer trying, at first unsuccessfully, to communicate with Bernadette Kahn, an older established writer portrayed by British actress Kathryn Hunter. Ms. Kahn had memories of the ocean liner, the S.S. St. Louis, and those on board the ship which Saquiel wished to know. Ariel, her first love, a Jew, along with 936 other Jews, all thought they were being transported from Germany to freedom in Cuba just as the war was about to begin. The second plot, a memory from the past of the refusal of Cuba, the United States and Canada to accept the Jews as refugees or even as tourists, was very, very sotto voce. This memory was mirrored by the no, no, no of the writer to, at first, even entertain discussing anything with the young Cuban student. To talk about it would require Bernadette to think about the past and this was something she resisted. A third main character, Lucila, played by Hannia Guillen, was an undocumented Colombian house maid who was, in effect, a refugee without the prerequisite visa. A predicament in which the Jews about the S.S. St. Louis could only wish for themselves.
The play opens in a dual setting by Adrian W. Jones – walls of books which were the writer’s study and the library from which the student called and emailed each day while his own U.S. visa was slowly running out. The moments that took place aboard the liner were acted out by Mascaro and Guilllen as Ariel and Nina, his sister, towards the back of the stage before a large scrim on which was shown the sky and waters around Cuba.
This play, about one writer’s attempt to turn another writer’s memories into literature is an intimate portrait of three voices, in sotto voce mode, and is perfectly presented in the intimate setting which the Historic Asolo can provide.
Mr. Cruz’ next play, Bathing in Moonlight, was commissioned by the Greenfield Foundation in conjunction with The Hermitage Artist Retreat, and will have a reading in the Cook Theatre at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts on April 19th at 7:00 PM.

Cruz captures the resiliency of true love and the power of memories in this spiritual masterpiece. German-born novelist Bemadette Kahn lost her one true love when he fled Nazi Germany aboard the SS St. Louis, a ship carrying 937 Jewish immigrants seeking refuge in Cuba. Cuba and the United States tragically turned the ship away, leaving the ship’s passengers to return to Europe where many perished in Nazi concentration camps. Her heartbreak resurfaces when a young Jewish Cuban writer contacts the now 80-year-old reclusive, lovelorn Bemadette to research the ship’s ill-fated voyage.Their relationship slowly evolves into a transcendent romance based on her memories of the boy she never stopped loving.
Olivier Award-winning actress Kathryn Hunter, who was the first British female to ever professionally portray the title role in Shakespeare’s King Lear, stars as the wistful Bemadette. On screen, Ms. Hunter played Arabella Figg in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. NYU Tisch School of the Arts CAP21 graduate Ben Rosenbach and Cuban-American stage and television actress Hannia Guillen star alongside Hunter.
Cuban-born Nilo Cruz was the first Latino to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2003 for his Tony-nominated play Anna in the Tropics. He crafted the Spanish translation for Asolo Rep’s 2012 production of Hamlet, Prince of Cuba. In 2014 Mr. Cruz was awarded the prestigious Greenfield Prize and commissioned to write a brand new play, which will soon be read for the first time at Asolo Rep.

Sotto Voce continues the third season of Asolo Rep’s five-year American Character Project. The play artfully depicts several different American immigration stories throughout the 20th Century and the dawn of the 21st Century.

HANNIA GUILLEN* GUEST ARTIST, FIRST SEASON (Lucila/Nina, Sotto Voce) is a Cuban-American stage and television actress. She studied at Prometeo Theater at Miami-Dade College under Teresa Maria Rojas. Right out of school she landed a guest star role in Burn Notice, which thanks to casting director Ellen Jacoby, she turned into a recurring role on the soap opera Passions. She now resides in New York and works out of Repertorio Español, where she currently stars in Our Little Girl’s Getting Married, Doña Flor, In The Time of the Butterflies, and Blind Date, for which she received an A.C.E. award. Other theater credits include: The Repetition, The Color of Desire, and A Bicycle Country.

Asolo Repertory Theatre is located at 5555 North Tamiami Trail in the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts. The box office is open Monday 10am – 4pm, Tuesday 10am – 7:30pm, Wednesday – Saturday 10am – 8pm, and Sunday 10am – 2pm. The box office closes at 5pm when there are no evening performances and phone lines close one hour prior to the start of any performance. Season subscription packages are also available online and by visiting or calling the box office.
