90210 the Musical

By Diane DiResta

How much drama can the teens of Beverly Hills take?

Brandon and Brenda Walsh, the famous twin siblings from Minnesota, in the hit TV soap, Beverly Hills 90210, were re envisioned in 90210 the Musical.

Performed at the St Marks theater in New York City’s East Village, this parody is outright fun!

The super talented cast spoofed the roles originally played by Justin Priestly, Shannon Dougherty, Jennie Garth, Luke Perry and Tori Spelling who, by the way, is played by a male actor, Caleb Dehne. Mr Dehne did not disappoint as his performance was met with cheers.

It was lead actress Ana Marcu’s Off-Broadway debut and she ignited the crowd with her talented vocals and expressive comedic performance in the role of Brenda.

The show, written by Bob and Tobly McSmith, was all about the drama:

  • Can Brandon and Brenda be cool?
  • Will Kelly ever get together with Dylan?
  • Will Tori Spelling ever graduate?

Fans of the TV broadcast will recognize the episode themes but you don’t have to have background knowledge to enjoy the performance. There’s no real plot but a string of jokes about the characters, with Tori Spelling taking the brunt of the humor.

This Off-Broadway show created an intimacy unparalleled in any Broadway theater. The audience sang and clapped to the music and cheers and laughter abounded throughout the evening.

Christine Elise, who played Emily Valentine in the original TV broadcast, warmed up the crowd before the curtain opened. During the intermission, she eagerly entertained questions from a curious crowd who wanted to know the 411 about the original stars. Ms. Elise also signed copies of her book, Bathing and the Single Girl.

So if you’d like to drop your own dramas for the evening, come out and see 90210 the Musical. And have some mindless fun!
