RANGERS RECALL RHP NICK MARTINEZ FROM ROUND ROCK;
OPTION RHP TOM WILHELMSEN TO ROUND ROCK
Martinez will be available for tonight’s game in Oakland
Oakland, Calif. — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Martinez from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room on the active roster for Martinez, the team has optioned right-handed pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen to Round Rock.
Martinez will be in his second stint with Texas this season, as he was also with the club from April 16-24. He made one appearance during that first stint, taking the loss in extra innings on April 23 at Chicago-AL (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R-ER). He has spent the rest of the season at Round Rock, going 6-4 with a 4.50 ERA (32 ER/64.0 IP) in 11 games/starts. He earned the win in his last outing on Thursday at Iowa (5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R-ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR, 99 pitches/67 strikes). Martinez has gone 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA (6 ER/19.1 IP) over his last 3 starts with the Express, permitting just 3 walks against 22 strikeouts.
Wilhelmsen allowed 8 runs over 6.0 innings spanning 4 relief appearances in his second stint with Texas after being recalled on June 4. He was also with the club from Opening Day to May 15. He has a 1.13 ERA (1 ER/8.0 IP) in 5 appearances with Round Rock this season.
The Rangers’ major league roster remains at the 40-man limit.
