RANGERS ACTIVATE C ROBINSON CHIRINOS FROM 10-DAY INJURED LIST,
RECALL OF LEODY TAVERAS FROM ALTERNATE SITE
RHP Jesse Chavez placed on 10-day Injured List, INF/OF Rob Refsnyder designated for assignment

Arlington, Texas— The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Monday night’s game against the Oakland Athletics in Arlington:

  • Catcher Robinson Chirinos activated from 10-day Injured List.
  • Outfielder Leody Taveras recalled from Alternate Training Site.
  • Right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez placed on 10-day Injured List, retroactive to August 23, with a sprained left big toe.
  • Infielder/outfielder Rob Refsnyder designated for assignment.

Chirinos was placed on the 10-day Injured List on August 14, retroactive to August 11, with a right ankle sprain. He was unavailable to play on August 11-12 due to the Grade 1 sprain, and his last game was August 10 vs. Seattle. He did not accompany the team on last week’s road trip and has been working out at Globe Life Field as he progressed on an injury rehabilitation program. The club’s Opening Day catcher has batted .129 with no home runs and 2 RBI in 11 games/10 starts for Texas this season.

Taveras was a member of the Opening Day roster and made his Major League debut in the season opener on July 24 vs. Colorado, serving as a defensive replacement for the ninth inning. The 21-year-old became the youngest Texas position player to debut on Opening Day since Hank Blalock in 2002, and that remains his only MLB game to date, as he was optioned to the Alternate Site on July 28. Taveras hit .292 (7-24) with 2 home runs, 2 RBI, and 13 walks against 9 strikeouts over 13 Summer Camp intrasquad games. He also went 7-for-23 (.304) in 15 Spring Training games before the shutdown.

Chavez has allowed 11 runs-earned runs over 12 appearances and 11.1 innings for the Rangers this season. He last pitched on Saturday at Seattle, and the first date he would be eligible to return is September 2.

Refsnyder has been on the club’s roster for the entire season, batting .200 (6-30) with no home runs and one RBI in 15 games, making starts as the designated hitter (5), and at first base (2), left field (1), and right field (1).
