Quartet starring Roberta and Robert Turoff at The Glenridge Performing Arts Center March 27-April 2

[February 26, 2014- Sarasota, FL]  The Glenridge Performing Arts Theatre (GPAC) is staging its own production of Quartet, a comedy by playwright Ronald Harwood, opening on Thursday, March 27 with an 8 pm performance.  The cast is aptly led by Sarasota’s favorite veteran actors and founders of the long-running Golden Apple Dinner Theater, Roberta MacDonald Turoff and Robert Turoff, portraying two members of the eponymous “Quartet.”  Actors Richard LeVene and Judy Glynn complete the ensemble which will be directed by Peter Ivanov.

Produced by GPAC and starring a local professional cast, Quartet, also a 2012 award-winning film directed by Dustin Hoffman, follows the drama of retired opera divas and divos as they plan their annual concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday. (This couldn’t fit the character of Sarasota better!)

There will be a total of eight performances, each at The Glenridge Performing Arts Center (7333 Scotland Way, Sarasota.) Tickets are $15 for the general public and can be purchased on line at www.GPACTIX.com or by calling the GPAC box office at 552-5325.

Quartet in short: Beecham House is abuzz. The rumor circling the halls is that the home for retired musicians is soon to play host to a new resident. Word is, it’s a star. For Reginald Paget, Wilfred Bond and Cecily Robson, this sort of talk is par for the course at the gossipy home. But they’re in for a special shock when the new arrival turns out to be none other than their former singing partner, Jean Horton. Her subsequent career as a star soloist, and the ego that accompanied it, split up their long friendship and ended her marriage to Reggie, who takes the news of her arrival particularly hard. Can the passage of time heal old wounds? And will the famous quartet be able to patch up their differences in time for Beecham House’s gala concert?

Peter Ivanov, stage directorPeter Ivanov, the son of European circus stars and was born on the Ringling Bros. Circus train, started as a child acrobat in the family act who went on to earn his B.A. Comprehensive degree from Western Illinois University and his M.F.A. from the Asolo Conservatory. He has had a diverse acting career and has directed over one hundred productions.  He was the Founding Artistic Director of Theatre Works of Florida, Associate Artistic Director of Sarasota Actors Theatre, Partner and Producing Director of Golden Years Productions, and the Artistic Director of the Youth Opera of the Sarasota Opera Company.

See it all live on the GPAC stage. Despite their egos, the show must go on…and it does.
