Petaluma Shakespeare Company (PSC) will be holding a fundraiser to support Free Shakespeare by the River Sunday, August 28 from 2 to 5 pm at Azari Vineyards.
Last summer the newly formed PSC presented ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ outdoors on the Petaluma Foundry Wharf Green. The critics and audiences alike loved the show.
This year PSC is presenting ‘As You Like It’ September 16 to October 1. Unlike last year all performances will be free in 2016, a tradition PSC hopes to preserve forever.
As You Like It, an Equity approved project, will feature at least four Equity (professional) actors and is being directed by Chloe Bronzan, a well-known Berkeley resident director.
Free Shakespeare by the River is not without costs. Equity actors, stage crew, facilities, marketing and publicity all cost money. Sponsors and support from those who believe that the arts are an important part of community are needed.
To help raise funds, PSC will be hosting a fund raiser at Azari Vineyards on August 28th, 2016 between 2 & 5 pm.
Azari Winery provides an exceptionally beautiful setting for this event. In addition to two glasses of wine, and pizza, attendees will be able to enjoy a discussion with the director illustrated by some scene readings by cast members and musical entertainment by Sonho de Magia.
For more information, call 707-287-1766 for tickets or go to the website www.PetalumaShakespeare.org.
In addition to the fundraiser, private and corporate donations are being solicited to ensure that everyone can experience the magic of a professional Shakespearean production at an inviting river setting that makes the art and artistry more accessible to all.
- Why Free? PSC’s mission is to make the performing arts available to everyone regardless of age, ethnicity, financial status or level of education. Their overall goal is to encourage broad participation in the arts and make the arts an active part of community life in Petaluma.
- Why Shakespeare?: The timeless appeal of Shakespeare’s plays reveal truths about the range of human emotions that still resonate today. His profoundly eloquent language explores love, jealousy, growing older and much more that encompasses the human condition.
- Why by the River?: Just as theaters in Shakespeare’s time were open to the sky, PSC’s performances by the river make the art and artistry more accessible to all. Performing in public space allows all to feel welcome and reminding us that art is a part of our everyday lives.
