French glam pop artist Cocovan is revealing her self-directed video for her danceable, feel-good single “Chic (Someone to Love)” via Noisey. Inspired by 80s pop artists like Prince, Grace Jones, and Madonna, the song is sugary sweet, yet perfectly pairs with the DIY behind-the-scenes video, making for a real authenticity rarely seen in the over-the-top pop world. With “Chic (Someone to Love)” and her upcoming EP The Club, Cocovan proves herself on the same level as reigning pop queens like Charli XCX, Lauren Mayberry (CHVRCHES), and Sky Ferreira.
Born in Paris to an Iranian father and a French mother, Cocovan has spent the last six years bouncing between the music and art scenes of Paris, New York, and L.A., all the while toting the “mobile studio” that she uses to write and produce her own music. She is a self-taught musician, and in addition to producing her own music, Cocovan has also had a hand in creating her music videos: she directed the video for “Chic,” which was shot in one take as per a live performance. Says Coco, “The video for “Chic (Someone To Love)” was shot in one take. I wanted it to look like the rehearsal for a pop music video. A music video inside a music video, if you will! When you shoot sequence-shots, there’s this feeling that you are not allowed to fail, when actually it allows imperfections to turn into happy accidents and for magic to happen!”
After taking a year hiatus from social media and removing all her old material from the internet, Cocovan has returned with “Chic,” a new single from her upcoming The Club EP. This fresh, danceable track is at the same time refreshing and reminiscent of music from years gone by.
