| On Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m., Nicola and Beatrice Bulgari and the Carnegie Hall Notables—a membership and ticket program for music enthusiasts in their 20s and 30s—host the 12th Annual Notable Occasion: An Evening with Jeremy Denk. This private performance in Zankel Hall for Carnegie Hall Notables and special guests features the acclaimed pianist playing with members of Ensemble ACJW in a program that includes Bartók’s Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano and Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major, Op. 81. After the exclusive concert, the Notables gather at Remi Restaurant for a cocktail reception and dinner stations. The 12th Annual Notable Occasion is generously underwritten by Nicola and Beatrice Bulgari.
The 12th Annual Notable Occasion is one of a series of annual special events offered for Carnegie Hall Notables members. The Carnegie Hall Notables support the educational programs of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI) and celebrate music through intimate discussions, concerts, cocktail parties, and more. WMI brings innovative programs to classrooms in underserved communities, provides free music education resources to orchestras and schools across the country, presents free concerts in all five boroughs of New York City, and makes musical experiences accessible to people in homeless shelters, the healthcare system, and the justice system. About the Artists Last season, Mr. Denk launched his four-season tenure as an artistic partner of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and performed Bach concertos with Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in London and on tour throughout the US. Following the release of his disc of J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations—which reached number one on Billboard‘s Classical Albums chart—he performed the work throughout Europe, including his debut performance at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and at LSO St. Luke’s in London. Mr. Denk has toured frequently with violinist Joshua Bell; their Sony Classical album, French Impressions, won the 2012 ECHO Klassik award. He also collaborates regularly with cellist Steven Isserlis. Mr. Denk has appeared at numerous festivals, including the Italian and American Spoleto Festivals, and the Verbier, Ravinia, Tanglewood, Aspen Music, and Mostly Mozart festivals. In 2014, Mr. Denk served as music director of the Ojai Music Festival, for which, besides performing and curating, he wrote the libretto for the comic opera The Classical Style. The opera was presented by Carnegie Hall last season. Mr. Denk is known for his original and insightful writing on music, which Alex Ross praises for its “arresting sensitivity and wit.” The pianist’s writing has appeared in The New Yorker, New Republic, The Guardian, and on the front page of The New York Times Book Review. One of his New Yorker contributions, “Every Good Boy Does Fine,” forms the basis of a memoir for future publication by Random House (US) and Macmillan Publishers (UK). Recounting his experiences of touring, performing, and practicing, his blog,Think Denk, was recently selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress web archives. Mr. Denk graduated from Oberlin College, Indiana University, and The Juilliard School. He currently lives in New York City. Called “a valuable part of New York’s musical fabric” by The New York Times, Ensemble ACJW is made up of some of the finest young professional classical musicians in the United States who are taking part in a two-year fellowship program created in 2007 by Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. The program prepares fellows for careers that combine musical excellence with teaching, community engagement, advocacy, entrepreneurship, and leadership by offering them top-quality performance opportunities, intensive professional development, and the opportunity to partner throughout the fellowship with a New York City public school. As performers on the concert stage and in their work in schools and communities, musicians of Ensemble ACJW have earned accolades from critics and audiences alike for the quality of their concerts, their fresh and open-minded approach to programming, and their ability to actively engage any audience.
