Stream: “I Am Almost Perfectly Awake” at All Things Go or SoundCloud
San Francisco-based band NRVS LVRS (pronounced “Nervous Lovers”) is the dreamy darkwave project of husband & wife duo Andrew Gomez and Bevin Fernandez. Today the band revealed their new single “I Am Almost Perfectly Awake” from their sophomore album Electric Dread out June 30. The track premiered on All Things Go and can also be shared via Soundcloud. All Things Go says, “Sci-fi scenes come to mind with NRVS LVRS‘ latest single. As they introduce ‘I Am Almost Perfectly Awake’ with a controlled, digital burn, the San Francisco duo open a channel to the dark corners of consciousness. With a staggering beat layered below chilling sweeps, we take turns unexpected through a dark tunnel. This taste of darkness is from their forthcoming record Electric Dread.”
About the song the band says:
“‘I Am Almost Perfectly Awake’ is inspired by Clive Wearing, a musicologist who suffers from severe amnesia and experiences life anew from moment to moment, as if he is waking from a coma every twenty seconds. The title was taken from a line he repeatedly wrote in his diary, and we kept coming back to the phrase and how searching & sad it sounded. Trying to imagine living life with no memories had us trying to unpack so many different thoughts: how our identities are tied to our memory, how scary it must be to wake up not knowing who or where you are hundreds of times a day, and how the loss of a memory is a kind of death. While writing the album, we were dealing with quite a bit of death and loss in our own lives, so the idea of someone who is still physically present yet missing their identity resonated as a mirror image of the grief we were experiencing.”
NRVS LVRS have announced West Coast shows in Los Angeles, Sacramento and a hometown record release show on June 30 at Bottom Of The Hill. Additional tour dates will be announced in the coming weeks.
NRVS LVRS cite acts like Massive Attack, Can, and Kate Bush as influences and their music flirts with caustic electro-pop elements similar to that of The Knife, Bat for Lashes, or Crystal Castles. The dulcet tones of Fernandez’ soaring vocals complimented by Gomez’ low crooning glide over layers of ominous synths, driving guitar, and precise percussion to create compelling electronic soundscapes.
San Francisco natives Gomez and Fernandez —recording as NRVS LVRS since 2014— can be found offstage crate digging at Amoeba, cheering on the Warriors, and supporting the Bay Area art scene. The pair’s 2015 debut LP on Breakup Records, The Golden West, was praised by SF Weekly as “crepuscular and opaque, with a grimy layer to it that thinly disguises the vein of pop running through the song[s].” NRVS LVRS has since opened for acts like Jagwar Ma and Telekinesis and received glowing reviews from PopMatters and Noisey. They spent the summer of 2016 recording Electric Dread with producer Larry Crane at Jackpot! Studio in Portland.
