New Orleans based, Big Al & the Heavyweights are bringing their Gumbo Grooves to the legendary Five O’Clock Club. The Heavyweights offer an unconventional performance, reflecting the band’s influences of blues, jazz, zydeco, and rock. But more than anything, their shows are just plain fun!
The band started in 1995 as the Unknown Blues Band with founding members Warren Haynes and Al Lauro. Both were members of David Allan Coe’s band and formed the UBB as a side project because of their love of Roots Music. Big Al and the Heavyweights, got a big break when Dan Aykroyd featured one of the band’s songs, “House Party”, on the House Of Blues Radio Show. The band has appeared on the show several times. They have also been the featured musical guest on then Chef Emeril Lagassee’s “Emeril Live”, performing on his the Mardi Gras Show, as well as his Cajun and Creole cooking shows. Big Al & the Heavyweights music can also be found on Mardi Gras Records, “Ultimate Mardi Gras” Cd along with such esteemed artists as the late great Professor Longhair, Rebirth Brass Band, Rockin Dopsie and The Olympia Brass Band.
The latest CD, “Sunshine On Me” was recorded in Slidell at Suite Mix Studios and produced by Anders Osborne who also performs on the CD with special musical guest, Warren Haynes on the title track.
This tour features the Baton Rouge blues legend, Harmonica Red and up and coming blues rock guitarist, Lance Younger along with long time bassist Dean Galatas.
The band has built their reputation for their no holes barred shows through years of extensive touring. This is a show that you don’t want to miss.
