National Women’s Health & Fitness Day is next Wednesday, September 30, and the Ailey Extension is hosting a special class at 7pm that evening in honor of women’s wellness.  Three of the program’s most revered instructors will come together for a three-part class designed to promote the importance of health and everyday fitness activity for women of all ages.  Irini Res will begin with Ashtanga yoga, followed by Ailey Barre with Sarita Allen, and Karen Arceneaux will close with a dynamic Zumba bootcamp workout.

It’s going to be a phenomenal evening of wellness and empowerment, and we want to make sure women throughout the city know about this one-time-only opportunity. It would be great if you could list/highlight/mention the National Women’s Health & Fitness Day class sometime before next Wednesday.

The Ailey Barre is a weekly class on Thursdays at 6pm, beginning April 16, designed to help students increase flexibility and exude power and grace. Taught by former Ailey dancer and current Ailey Extension Pilates instructor Sarita Allen, the class will focus on sculpting the body through barre training to develop longer, leaner muscles. The extreme core strengthening exercises will use resistance cables, yoga straps, and blocks, to assure proper body alignment and optimum results.

Ashtanga Yoga is the system of Yoga originally taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. The practice involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of poses – a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse purifying perspiration that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

Zumba Bootcamp (this class will be a combine dance elements with bootcamp fitness techniques – the description below is an example of what the class might include, but it’ll be something all its own). Zumba® Fitness is a feel-happy workout that combines a motivating fusion of Latin and international music with unique moves and dynamic combinations that allow participants to dance away their worries.  It is based on the principle that a workout should be “Fun and Easy to Do” allowing Zumba® Fitness participants to stick to the program and achieve long-term health benefits in both body and mind.   A mixture of body-sculpting movements with easy-to-follow dance steps, the routines utilize the principles of aerobic interval and resistance training.  A combination of fast and slow rhythms tone and sculpt the body, maximizing caloric output, fat burning and total body toning.
