Music Fine Arts at First Church presents “Stabat Mater” by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi sung by sopranos Trine Bolling and Robyn Rocklein, accompanied by the Chroma Quartet, Sunday, March 23, 7 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 104 S. “Stabat Mater” was composed by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in 1736 in the final weeks of his life. His best-known sacred work, it’s based on a 13th-century Catholic hymn to Mary and has been set to music by many composers, including Scarlatti and Vivaldi, Haydn, Rossini, Poulenc, and Dvořák. Pergolesi’s work became the most frequently printed work of the 18th century.
“Pergolesi’s writing allows exquisitely warm voices to truly express the passion of this music,” says Elizabeth Goldstein, coordinator of Music Fine Arts at First Church. “The Chroma Quartet accompanying assures a stellar, unforgettable performance.”
Danish soprano, Trine Bolling, graduated from the Malmö Conservatoire and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Great Britain where she received a Professional Performer’s Diploma. Bolling’s performances throughout Europe include recitals, oratorios, and opera. Since moving to Sarasota two years ago, she has been actively pursuing her music career with Gloria Musicae, Belle Canto, and Key Chorale and also maintains a teaching studio.
Robyn Rocklein, mezzo-soprano, has appeared throughout the United States and Europe. Her opera roles include Carmen (Carmen), Elizabeth (The Crucible), Hansel (Hansel & Gretel), and Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia) with companies such as Arizona Opera and St. Petersburg Opera. She has sung the “Verdi Requiem,” Mozart’s “Mass in C Minor,” Rossini’s “Stabat Mater,” and Bach’s “B Minor Mass.” She holds a B.M. and M.M. from the University of Arizona and a D.M.A. in vocal performance from Arizona State University.
The Chroma Quartet, formed in 2008 by violinists Christopher Takeda and Jennifer Best-Takeda, violist Michael McClelland, and cellist Abraham Feder, are noted for their dynamic musicianship and musical excellence.
