Music Director Emeritus James Levine Conducts a Revival of
L’Italiana in Algeri, With Marianna Pizzolato and
René Barbera Making Met Debuts in the Leading Roles
Rossini’s early comedy also stars Nicola Alaimo and Ildar Abdrazakov in a revival of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s production, last seen at the Met in 2004
New York, NY (September 29, 2016) – James Levine leads his first opera as the Met’s new Music Director Emeritus, a revival of Rossini’s comedy L’Italiana in Algeri. The comedic opera, which has not been seen at the Met since 2004, tells the story of a feisty Italian girl who gets kidnapped and must tricks her captors in order to escape. Italian mezzo-soprano Marianna Pizzolato and American tenor René Barbera make their respective company debuts as the title character, Isabella, and the love-struck Lindoro. Nicola Alaimo sings the role of Taddeo, and Ildar Abdrazakov reprises the role of Mustafà, the pasha overcome by love and pasta.
