MAYOR ERIC GARCETTI
CITY OF LOS ANGELES
GARCETTI STATEMENT ON PORT WORK ACTION
“Making sure nothing stands in the way of goods flowing through the Port of Los Angeles is a top priority of my Administration. The Port of Los Angeles is a multi-billion dollar economic engine that drives our local and national economy. That is why I have been in close contact with the ILWU and the PMA as they negotiate their West Coast contract. I am pleased they are continuing their negotiations in a way that allows work to continue and cargo to move at our ports.
“I have also been working closely on the issue of working conditions for truck drivers at the Port of L.A.
“Port Truck drivers are a critical link in our global economy and they deserve quality working conditions. I appreciate those trucking companies who are having an honest dialogue about the issues that have led to the job action this week.
“My office has been working with all sides to address concerns about working conditions and to keep commerce flowing. As a result of our dialogue with Green Fleet Systems and the Teamsters, they have agreed to a cooling-off period during which their operations will continue while the truck drivers’ concerns about working conditions are being addressed. I want to thank Green Fleet Systems and the Teamsters for coming to the table and making sure the cargo continues to move.
“I also want to thank TTSI, which has agreed to sit down with our office and the Teamsters to find a way to get its operation back to work, and we urge Pac 9 to come to the table as well. It is in everyone’s best interests for these operations to continue.”
