“If you think you know what Middle Eastern music sounds like, think again”  – NPR

“Hamdan has perfected a very particular kind of disaffected cool, like a less effortful Lana Del Ray” – NPR

Yasmine Hamdan’s Ya Nass (Crammed Discs) is an elegant, borderless stream of electro folk pop, with acoustic guitars, vintage synths, and spellbinding atmospheres. While Yasmine’s vocals are definitely connected to traditions of Arabic music, the structures and arrangements of the songs are very remote from its codes.
The record is grounded in Yasmine’s evocative voice, which make these songs familiar, even as they are sung in various Arabic dialects. World music DJ Betto Arcos particularly took notice of this, and included Yasmine’s track “Beirut” in his recent ‘music encounters’ feature via NPR’s All Things Considered blog, which you can check out HERENPR’s First Listen also debuted the full album stream of Ya Nass today; head HERE to listen to the album in full.

Alongside Yasmine’s voice are Marc Collin’s keyboards and exquisite guitar work by Kevin Seddiki (who co-wrote three of the songs) and by former CocoRosie collaborator Gaël Rakotondrabe, who arranged and produced the track “Enta Fen, Again”.

In addition to Ya Nass, Yasmine will be appearing as herself in the new Jim Jarmuschfilm Only Lovers Left Alive (featuring Tilda Swinton) where she will be singing “Hal”, from Ya Nass.  There will be an exclusive premiere screening of the film in New York on April 1, to be followed by performances at Santos Party House featuring White Hills, Jozef Van Missem, Zola Jesus, Jim Jarmusch’s band SQÜRL and Yasmine Hamdan. Tickets are available for purchase HERE.
