Katherine Mitchell Celebrated at Book Launch Event in NYC

Review by: Anne Akers

On Monday January 29, 2024, Katherine Mitchell, whose memoir From Budapest to Hollywood, Searching for the Promised Land, recently published by The Three Tomatoes Publishing, was interviewed by the head of the publishing company, Cheryl Benton. The well-attended event took place at the historic Lambs organization in NYC, America’s oldest professional theatrical club.

Katherine’s memoir is a rollercoaster ride from Budapest to New York and Hollywood. From daring escapes to shattered dreams, Katherine’s journey embodies the indomitable human spirit. The attendees at the event were enthralled to hear about her remarkable life—from refugee dishwasher to Hollywood publicist, agent, paralegal and screenwriter.

During the interview she read portions of her inspiring book and discussed her escape from Communist Budapest to New York City and what it was like being a refugee in a foreign land. After high school and college in NYC, she married an actor and off they went to the promised land of Hollywood – which she calls the “land of hopes, dreams, and suffering.”

A highlight of the event was her candid discussion of her time in Hollywood in the 1960s and early 1970, and what it was like being a woman in the #metoo days, when everyone was silent about them. She knew and worked with many famous names in Hollywood – the good people and the not so good people – and she shared several shocking stories that made the audience gasp.

Katherine Mitchell has lived a remarkable life and is a true embodiment of a Renaissance woman. With a passion for storytelling, she has been part of the entertainment industry as an agent, writer, and story analyst for film and television projects during her years in Los Angeles. Her talent and dedication earned her the coveted privilege of membership in the Writers Guild of America West. Katherine’s ultimate aspiration in revealing her life-journey is to inspire others to constantly hone their true selves and “be who you are until you find out who you want to be.” Her book is available at booksellers everywhere.

Katherine MK Mitchell’s Inspiring Memoir Chronicles Resilience, Hope, and the Pursuit of Dreams

Nov. 2023… In a world often marred by challenges and setbacks, Katherine MK Mitchell’s memoir, From Budapest to Hungary: Searching for the Promised Land (The Three Tomatoes Publishing) stands as a beacon of resilience, hope, and the unwavering pursuit of a brighter future. Her remarkable journey, chronicled in vivid detail, takes readers on a rollercoaster ride from Budapest to New York and Hollywood, embodying the indomitable human spirit.

In the words of Ruta Lee, the acclaimed actor, author, and philanthropist, “Katherine MK Mitchell’s optimism, unwavering pursuit of a brighter future, and self-deprecating humor serve as powerful reminders that even in life’s harshest disappointments, one can rise above and become who they were meant to be.”

Katherine’s story begins with the longest day of her life—a daring escape from communist Hungary with her mother, involving truck rides, buggy journeys, and treacherous walks on foot. Born Jewish in Nazi-occupied Hungary during WWII, she later emerged as a promising ballerina and nationally ranked gymnast. Those dreams were shattered when she and her mother attempted to reach the promised land of Israel as passengers on the doomed ship, S.S. Exodus.

Their journey eventually led them to the American Midwest, where Katherine unhesitatingly transitioned from a star gymnast to a refugee dishwasher. But she didn’t stop there. Her determination propelled her to New York City, where she pursued a career as a model before marrying an aspiring actor and venturing to Hollywood.

Unfazed by the challenges of being perceived and abused as a “dumb foreigner,” Mitchell embarked on a series of diverse careers, including talent agent, screenwriter, and trial paralegal in Beverly Hills. She supported her husband (who eventually became her ex) and their child while always teetering on the cusp of a lucky break that seemed perpetually out of reach. Her Hollywood experiences are filled with encounters with well-known producers, actors, screenwriters, and Hollywood elites, making for an engaging guessing game for readers.

This memoir takes readers on an emotional journey, from heart-wrenching moments to sidesplitting humor, celebrating the resilience of the human spirit. Through the highs and lows, the disappointments and triumphs, Katherine remained grounded, hopeful, and committed to her dream of becoming accepted as a writer.

Katherine memoir is a story that will resonate with anyone who has faced adversity and emerged stronger, demonstrating that, even in the face of life’s harshest disappointments, one can rise above and become who they were meant to be.
