Juilliard announces the 2014-15 season of opera and vocal arts performances by its Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. Highlights of the upcoming season include three main stage operas by Rossini, Britten, and Mozart; a residency followed by a public master class with Dutch soprano Elly Ameling; Juilliard Songfest, a program curated and performed by pianist and Marcus Institute Artistic Director Brian Zeger, featuring Juilliard singers; and a New York Festival of Song at Juilliard concert featuring songs by “Great American Songwriting Teams”. AMet+Juilliard co-presentation will be announced at a later date, as will the winners of the Alice Tully Vocal Arts Recital Award. Three additional Juilliard vocal master classes will be announced and will be streamed live. Last season’s master classes featured mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, soprano Renée Fleming, and bass-baritone Eric Owens.
The Juilliard Opera season opens with a production of Gioachino Rossini’s Il turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy), a drama buffo in two acts. Juilliard alumnus Speranza Scappucci conducts Juilliard singers and the Juilliard Orchestra in the production directed by John Giampietro. The libretto for the opera is by Felice Romani, after the libretto by Caterino Mazzolà. Rossini was only 22 years old at the time he wrote the opera and already was esteemed as an operatic composer. His opera, L’italiana in Algeri, performed a year prior, was a success and led him to compose a companion piece.Il turco in Italia had its first performance on August 14, 1814 at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. The audience in Milan felt the opera was too similar to L’italiana in Algeri, and they felt cheated by Rossini; the opera was not warmly received. The quality of the score helped change that, and the opera was revived just four years after its premiere and was well-received. Today the opera is considered a masterpiece of the buffo genre. Performances take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 and Friday, November 21, 2014 at 8 PM; and Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 2 PM in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

Speranza Scappucci is rapidly making her mark as one of the most versatile and dynamic new conductors internationally. In 2013 she conducted, a highly praised version of I Capuleti e i Montecchiat the Yale Opera after her success the previous year with Così fan tutte, and led a staged and choreographed version of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater at the Glimmerglass Opera Festival. She opened Scottish Opera’s 2013-14 season in her UK debut with a new production of Don Giovanni directed by Sir Thomas Allen. Current and upcoming engagements for the Italian-born conductor includeDon Giovanni at Finnish National Opera, La traviata at the Macerata Opera Festival 2014, Norma at Teatro National de São Carlos in Lisbon, Rossini’s L’equicovo stravagante in her Spanish debut at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao. In 2015, she will conduct a Rossini work at the Washington Opera and make her Santa Fe Opera debut with a new production of La fille du régiment. Other recent conducting engagements include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic at Concertgebouw, and Orchestra Regionale della Toscana in Florence. Ms. Scappucci is a graduate of Juilliard and the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome. A pianist, she also has been an active accompanist and has played at Carnegie and Alice Tully halls. Ms. Scappucci spent six summers (2001-2006) at the Glyndebourne Festival where she worked with conductors Vladimir Jurowski, William Christie, Charles Mackerras, Emmanuelle Haïm, Philippe Jordan, and Louis Langrée.
John Giampietro is a Brooklyn-based director of opera and theater. Recent directing credits include Eric Dufault’s Year of the Rooster at Ensemble Studio Theatre (Out Critics Circle Award for playwriting and Drama Desk nomination for featured actor Bobby Moren). He is a frequent director for EST’s Obie Award-winning playwriting program, Youngblood. At Juilliard, Mr. Giampietro directed Le nozze di Figaro and the double-bill Curlew River and Riders to the Sea. Other productions have been seen at The Accidental Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Vermont Shakespeare, Phoenix Theater, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Serials@The Flea, Curtis Institute of Music, and the Chautauqua Institution. Mr. Giampietro is a faculty member and principal stage director for the Chautauqua Institution School of Music and a faculty member in Juilliard’s Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. He is the author of the plays, The Immolation of Kathy Chang(e) and The Strength of God and other grotesques. His 2014 projects included play development at Ryder Farm with Eric Default and The Green Plays! at Gowanus Art and Production.
In February, in Juilliard’s intimate Rosemary and Meredith Willson Theater, the Juilliard Opera season continues with a production of Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, conducted byMark Shapiro and directed by Mary Birnbaum, and featuring Juilliard singers and members of the Juilliard Orchestra. The libretto by Ronald Duncan is based on André Obey’s play, Le viol de Lucrèce (1931). The opera was composed in 1945-6, revised in 1947, and premiered on July 12, 1946 at Glyndebourne in Sussex, England; the U.S. premiere took place on June 1, 1947 at the Shubert Theater of Chicago Opera. Performances take place on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 and Friday, February 20, 2015 at 8 PM; and Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 2 PM in Juilliard’s Rosemary and Meredith Willson Theater.

Mark Shapiro is music director of the Prince Edward Island Symphony and The Cecilia Chorus of New York and artistic director of Cantori New York. His performances in Carnegie Hall with The Cecilia Chorus of New York have included works by Handel, Lauridsen, Mozart, Verdi, and David Randolph. With Cantori New York, he has conducted national, local, and world premieres by an impressive roster of international composers. Mr. Shapiro is one of a handful of artistic leaders in North America to have won a prestigious ASCAP programming award four times, achieving this unique distinction of winning this award with more than one ensemble. Mr. Shapiro enjoys working in opera and with orchestras, as well as choruses. At Juilliard, he conducted Poulenc’s comic opera, Les mamelles de Tirésias in 2010.
Mary Birnbaum is a New York City-based director of theater and opera. Most recent credits include a chamber version of Eugene Onegin at Juilliard (“This is a different kind of ‘Onegin’… more personal and rawer” –The New York Times), the world premiere of Jeremy Denk and Steven Stucky’s The Classical Style at the Ojai Festival, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail at IVAI in Israel.Other music works include productions at Juilliard (La finta giardiniera, Le donne curiose, Down in the Valley), American Opera Projects (Bad Romance), Melbourne Opera Studio (Rorem’s Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters), New World Symphony (Joe Tracz’s The Nest Thief), and NYFOS @ Juilliard. Ms. Birnbaum founded and led Art Party Theater Company, an interactive storytelling company that was hailed as “genius” (Encore Magazine). She has also collaborated with playwrights to develop new plays with the Playwright’s Realm, LA’s Son of Semele Theater, New Orleans Fringe Festival, and The Old Vic in London. She is an alumna of the Soho Rep Writers/Directors Lab and a current member of the New Georges Jam. Ms. Birnbaum has assisted Stephen Wadsworth at Santa Fe Opera (King Roger), the Met (Boris Godunov), Manhattan Theater Club (Master Class) and Seattle Opera (Amelia). She was the associate director of Wadsworth’s Ring cycle at Seattle Opera in 2013. As the associate director of the Artist Diploma in Opera Studies program at Juilliard, Ms. Birnbaum teaches and coaches acting for singers at the undergraduate, master’s, and post-graduate level. She has an A.B. from Harvard, a certificate in movement and design from Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, and was the first recipient of the Marcus Directing Fellowship at Juilliard.
The Juilliard Opera season concludes with a production of W.A. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, K. 492 (The Marriage of Figaro) opera buffa in four acts conducted by Gary Thor Wedow and directed by Stephen Wadsworth. The libretto is by Lorenzo da Ponte, after a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou Le Marriage de Figaro (1784). The first performance took place on May 1, 1786 at the Burgtheater in Vienna with Mozart conducting. With Le nozze di Figaro (2015), Mr. Wadsworth will complete his Mozart-da Ponte trilogy, having previously directedDon Giovanni (2012) and Così fan tutte (2013) at Juilliard. He also has directed Falstaff, Ariodante, and The Bartered Bride at the School. Performances take place on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 8 PM; Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 2 PM; and Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 8 PM in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

Conductor Gary Thor Wedow has established an enviable reputation for dramatically exciting and historically informed performances with opera companies, orchestras, and festivals throughout North America. He debuted with the New York Philharmonic in 2012 conducting Handel’s Messiah and returned in 2013-14 for the same work. A frequent guest of Seattle Opera, some of Mr. Wedow’s recent successes there include the double bill of Poulenc’s La voix humaine and Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Gluck’s Orphée, and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Recently, Mr. Wedow conducted The Magic Flute with Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the world premiere of Paul Richards and Wendy Steiner’s Biennale at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, and Messiah for the Seattle Symphony. In 2014, he led J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion on tour with Juilliard415 in Aiken, South Carolina and Spivey Hall in Morrow, Georgia, culminating in an Alice Tully Hall concert. He also conducted Don Pasquale for Arizona Opera; The Abduction from the Seraglio for Utah Opera; and Don Giovanni for Seattle Opera. Mr. Wedow has appeared regularly with Wolf Trap Opera and The Berkshire Choral Festival, most recently for the Haydn Missa in tempore belli in Salzburg. He has been a member of Juilliard’s faculty since 1994 and has led performances there ofL’incoronazione di Poppea, La finta giardiniera, Ariodante, and most recently, Don Giovanni.
Stephen Wadsworth’s 2013-14 season included the final mounting of his Ring cycle for Seattle Opera, and the premiere of his translations of Beaumarchais’ plays The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton. He has directed theater and opera all over the world, including, in recent seasons, Master Class on Broadway and in the West End, the Aeschylus Agamemnon at the Getty Villa in Los Angeles, and the world premiere of Amelia (for which he wrote the story) in Seattle. Mr. Wadsworth is the James S. Marcus Faculty Fellow at The Juilliard School, and director of its advanced training program for singers, the first-ever intensive acting course for singers. He is also head of dramatic studies for the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera, where he has three productions in the repertoire—Rodelinda, Iphigénie en Tauride, and Boris Godunov. His translations of Marivaux and Molière earned him a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, and he was also 2013 Playwriting Fellow at Sundance Theatre Lab and a Harman/Eisner Artist-in-Residence at The Aspen Institute. Mr. Wadsworth wrote the opera A Quiet Place with Leonard Bernstein.

Elly Ameling is beloved and admired throughout the world for her splendid and expressive voice and her compelling artistry. Her 1995-96 farewell tour marked a milestone in a remarkable career. After her professional debut as a concert singer in Rotterdam in 1953, she performed for more than 40 years in virtually every major cultural center in the world. Her frequent appearances with the leading international orchestras (Haitink, Giulini, Britten, Ozawa, Sawallisch, among her conductors) have established her as one of the greatest singers of our age. Ms. Ameling has regularly sung at the Aix-en-Provence, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Bergen, and Tanglewood festivals, to name only a few. She has sung in operas, notably Mozart operas, but art song is her specialty. In her recitals, she educated future generations of singers, the brilliant values of German Lied and French mélodie. Her dedication to a highly individualized art form has resulted in the production of countless recordings, many of which are regularly being re-issued. Elly Ameling is in great demand throughout the world for her master classes for singers and their pianists. She has been awarded four honorary degrees and has been knighted by her Majesty the Queen of The Netherlands for her services to music.
Alice Tully Vocal Arts Recital Award
The Alice Tully Vocal Arts Recital Award was created with a permanently endowed grant from the Alice Tully Foundation and provides important public recital opportunities for both emerging and established artists. Now in its 18th year, the Alice Tully Vocal Arts Recital has been awarded to an impressive array of Juilliard singers, including Paul Appleby, Michèle Losier, Susanna Phillips, Shenyang, Sarah Wolfson, Jennifer Zetlan, and last season, Sasha Cooke. The winners of the 2014-15 Alice Tully Vocal Arts Recital Award and the date of the recital will be announced.

Liederabend
Juilliard’s Liederabend series showcases singers from the Marcus Institute in performances of song literature.
