Last June, dozens of music critics from the US and Canada attended San Francisco Opera premiere productions and a semi-staged Missa Solemnis at the San Francisco Symphony. We toured the Symphony’s new Sound Box space, where we heard a demonstration of its state-of-the art sound system, attended informative panel discussions and other events with composers and performers, and perhaps best of all, enjoyed camaraderie with colleagues from all over.

The experience was typical of MCANA’s annual meetings, previous editions of which have been arranged around a U.S. premiere at Opera Theatre of St. Louis; symphony performances in Dallas/Ft. Worth; and many more.  This spring, we will gather in historic Charleston, S.C. for the Spoleto Festival USA, taking in a Baroque opera rarity; the U.S. premiere of Helmut Lachenmann’s “Little Match Girl;” a new production of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” in the renovated Gaillard Auditorium; and daily chamber music concerts.

MCANA members have the opportunity to write original reviews and features (fee paid) for our online publication, Classical Voice North America, a writer-run website.
Another great benefit of MCANA membership is the possibility of being selected for one of our tuition-free, in-depth institutes for five to ten people. Typically, most travel expenses are covered for these three- to five- day conclaves of performances, tours and workshops. Past institutes have included a social media and technology seminar at Syracuse University and an introduction to the Luminato Festival in Toronto. Coming up this month is an institute in New York City focused on contemporary music from Japan, and we are currently exploring the possibility of an institute in conjunction with Glimmerglass Opera this summer.  Other institutes will be announced as they become official.
MCANA’s annual dues are $125 per year. This year we are offering a discounted membership rate of $99 to all qualified new members and to those whose membership has lapsed for more than three years.

MCANA membership is open to print, web and broadcast journalists as well as arts writers whose work reflects critical opinion and extensive knowledge of the world of classical music. See the sidebar for details on how to apply.
