A native of Michigan, Greg Nielsen spent many years teaching and performing in Detroit. A multi-faceted brass musician, Nielsen has performed on trombone with such greats as Slide Hampton, Nancy Wilson, the Four Tops, Cab Calloway, Ramsey Lewis and many others. Nielsen performed in Florida for several years before returning to music education as an instructor at Booker Middle School, where he has inspired and cultivated aspiring young musicians for more than 27 years. He is also in top demand as a performer, sharing the stage with such names as Nat Adderley, Al Cohn, Bobby Shew and other notables. Nielsen also performs locally with the Sarasota Jazz Project.
“The jazz cruise has been a favorite for more than 10 years,” says Dave Walrath, president of the Jazz Club of Sarasota. “It’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon—cruising beautiful Sarasota Bay while taking in some great Dixieland jazz.”
