In tribute to the late, renowned director Patrice Chéreau, the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and will present two HD Opera screenings of Chéreau’s final production, Richard Strauss’s Elektra, on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 4 and 7pm in FIAF’s Florence Gould Hall. The acclaimed production of Strauss’s explosive revenge tragedyhad its world premiere at the Festival d’Aix in July 2013. Considered one of the greatest opera, stage, and film directors, Patrice Chéreau passed away in October 2013. The film is directed by Stéphane Metge, and features singers Evelyn Herlitzius, Waltraud Meier, Adrianne Pieczonka, and Mikhail Petrenko with the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Esa Pekka Salonen. The production is in German, with English subtitles.
As part of this special tribute, the 7pm screening will begin with a panel discussion focusing on Patrice Chéreau’s life and legacy, with Festival d’Aix’s General Manager Bernard Foccroulle, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera Peter Gelb, and Elektra set designer Richard Peduzzi, one of Chéreau’s closest collaborators. Both screenings will be followed by a free wine reception at FIAF.
The screening of Elektra is presented as part of FIAF’s weekly CinéSalon program, which pairs an engaging film with a post-screening wine reception, in the spirit of French ciné-clubs and literary salons. Each evening screening is thoughtfully introduced by a high-profile personality in the arts.
