GREAT LAKES MAYORS WANT TO KNOW WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND ON WATER ISSUES
Chicago, Illinois– The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative has released their first questionnaire for candidates running for Governor and the U.S. Senate. “With water issues on the forefront of everyone’s mind it is important to understand where the candidates stand who will have the most impact on drinking water issues and our future.” Stated John Dickert. President and CEO of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Cities Initiative representing over 100 Mayors in the US and Canada.
Water crisis in cities such as Toledo, Flint or Grand Rapids has reminded us not only of the great importance of our freshwater sources but also of the necessity to commit to the integrity of the Great Lakes through its protection and restoration.
“We look forward to the responses so we may educate the public and determine who we will be able to work with in the upcoming legislative session”, said John Dickert
In 2018, an International Joint Commission (IJC) POLL revealed that eighty-eight percent of respondents believe in the importance of the Great Lakes and therefore are ready to pay more to ensure their restoration and protection.
Water is a matter of intergenerational justice, public health and vitality for this region. For this purpose, we submitted a poll to all of those who are running for office in the Great Lakes region in order to better understand their position on important issues, such as invasive species, the protection of the Safe Drinking Water Act, or the support for organizations that are committed to the Great Lakes protection.
