Gay Germain Art Exhibition at [blank] slate gallery October 1-29
The [blank] slate gallery is pleased to present its October exhibition “Sculpture Garden Conversations”, a six-year work in progress series by Sarasota artist Gay Germain. A meet and greet with the artist will be held October 14 during Burns Court’s Second Friday “Sip & Stroll” 5 to 8 pm.
Sculpture Garden Conversations is a healthy chat with contradiction, where hard edges meet soft forms and large shapes wear delicate lines. Choosing specific forms, colors, lines, patterns and spacial divisions creates both harmony and discord. Using landscape elements as well as “characters” throughout her work, one may notice that some of these elements ‘cuddle up’ with each other while others appear to turn away toward other possibilities. They are all pieces of Germain’s artistic language: a visual mix of form and design that utilizes abstract and geometric shapes to express her thoughts and emotions.
In this body of work, consisting of mixed-media paintings and sculptures made of bent wood (knots) and concrete (characters), Germain uses a multi-media approach to escape the limitations of a single medium. She began the series with paintings, then utilized bent wood and carved concrete to extend her creative experience. These additional media provided a vehicle for tactile exploration of the ideas expressed through the painted works of this series. Collectively entitled Sculpture Garden Conversations, this multi-media approach greatly enhances the depth and breadth of the original paintings while supporting her desire to work in a process that is free from boundaries.
Gay Germain is an award winning artist whose work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions at the following museums and galleries:
NAWA – National Association of Women Artists, West Palm Beach Armory, Leepa-Rattner Museum of Fine Art, Tarpon Springs, FL, 50th Founders Juried Exhibition, von Leibig Arts Center, Naples, FL, Ringling College of Art + Design, Selby Gallery, Sarasota, FL, and the Naples Museum of Art in Naples, FL.
