The Friendly Food Fight, a kick-off event for Eat Local Week, features area chefs creating dishes that center on the theme “Lean and Green.”

BRADENTON, FL—The Bradenton Farmers Market presents the Friendly Food Fight, a kick-off event for Eat Local Week (October 24-30), Saturday, October 24, 10 a.m. Peg Haynes, the market’s manager, says that the event’s theme, in recognition of National Food Day’s green meal initiative, is “Lean and Green.”

“We’re asking area chefs to create either a vegetarian entrée or a dish that focuses on vegetables, with meat, poultry or fish as a minor focus,” she says, adding that participating chefs include Jim Copening of Arts & Eats; Fernando Drago of Drago’s; Gaetano Cannata of Ortygia; Erik Walker of the Sandbar and Dave Shiplett of Soma Creekside.

“The cook-off will be judged by a team of food-loving millennials with a healthy interest in our community,” says Haynes, adding that the event’s emcee is Shari Leiterman of Rawsome Foods. Judges include Amy Phillips of NDC Construction; Eleni Sokos of Sokos Social; Megan Jourdan with the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County; Maryann Lawler of Keller Williams Realty; and Angie and James Dauphinee who are Marine Corps veterans and State College of Florida students.
