Beginning today (6/14), CHELSEA DASH is sharing an advance listen of her new single “Quicksand,” ahead of its official release on Friday, June 24.The four-octave vocal powerhouse partnered with BreatheHeavy.com for an exclusive premiere of the song and lyric video, which they praised as an “empowering anthem helmed by the up-and-coming pop starlet” (6/14/16); watch now here. The hypnotic pop track is just the first of more new music to come as DASH will release her new album Dangerous on Friday, July 22.
“Quicksand” was produced by Tomas Costanza (Boys Like Girls, Clinton Sparks, Macklemore and 2 Chainz) and co-written by DASH and multi-platinum songwriter/producer Chris Rojas (Backstreet Boys, Pink, Jessica Simpson). CHELSEA initially wrote the song about a girlfriend of hers and a guy she was dating, but confesses she too has been caught up in that type of “toxic relationship.”
“He was the typical ‘bad boy’ who knew he had it going on and used his looks, charm and influence over her to always pull her back into his twisted games,” CHELSEA explains. “Even though she knew he was bad news, he always seemed to be able to pull her back in somehow. We nicknamed him ‘Mr. Quicksand.’ The lyrics of the song narrate this toxic romance and I think every girl has dated a ‘Mr Quicksand’ at some point in her life and can relate!”
Both personally and professionally, projecting an aura of strength and confidence is indispensably important to CHELSEA. “It’s okay to be a strong woman and to project that, and know who you are and not settle for anything or let anybody try to push you somewhere where you don’t want to go,” she shares. Dangerous is an eight-song sonic and lyrical puzzle with pieces that form a perfectly cohesive message of fun and feminism, revelry and rebelliousness, desire and danger. The collection brilliantly showcases the singer/songwriter/guitarist‘s unique blend of pop, dance and R&B, with undertones of soul.
“I mostly write in hindsight, because I have to be able to process all of the emotions of what’s happened before I feel like I can give a clear view from start to finish in a song.” That clear-eyed, measured view of her song craft is what gives DASH the ability to write insightful, powerful pop songs with a purpose.
In addition to working alongside producer Tomas Costanza on several tracks for Dangerous, DASH also collaborated with acclaimed producers Smitty Soul, who’s worked with Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, among others, and Goodwill & MGI who’ve been in studio with Justin Bieber, Akon, Sean Kingston, Kylie Minogue and more.
CHELSEA is an enigma in the most positive sense of the word. She was born and raised amongst the natural wilderness surrounding Mill Valley, CA, but admits she’s not a “small town person” and from a very young age knew she wanted to live along the concrete canyons. Her musical career began in preschool when for ‘Show and Tell’ she belted out her own rendition of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” much to the disgrace of her peers and teachers, and was nearly expelled. Following high school, her drive and tenacious spirit lead CHELSEA to New York City where she lived for a year before studying music at the prestigious Berklee College of Music; she has now settled in Los Angeles. She’s smart and sexy and declaratively affirms she’s a fierce feminist. Add these and many other traits, including the fact that she is a reflective versus reactive songwriter, and you get a sense of the subtext of several songs on Dangerous.
