Five plays by Steven Carl McCasland will be presented in repertory during a month-long celebration of the young playwright. Each play focuses on a different character from history, with a cast of 25 portraying such historical figures as Laurette Taylor, Rose Kennedy, Tennessee Williams, Agatha Christie, Joseph Goebbels, Gertrude Stein, Lillian Hellman and John F. Kennedy. Performances begin May 7, 2015.
In WHAT WAS LOST, Laurette Taylor returns to the stage after a six-year hiatus. For the first time in over a decade, she is sober. Chronicling Taylor’s process from the first rehearsal through her legendary first performance as Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, What Was Lost is a piercing look at the lies we tell ourselves in order to survive.
It’s France, 1939. Tensions are high. The booze is flowing. War is coming. Inspired by one of the literary world’s most famous scandals, LITTLE WARS features Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, Gertrude Stein, Agatha Christie, Alice B. Toklas and Muriel Gardiner having the best what-if dinner party imaginable. Together they’ll drink, scoff and face their demons. Everyone has a confession. Someone has a secret.
When a child is brutally murdered, the seismic aftershocks ripple throughout a small town. At its center, a marriage cripples. Inspired by the 1994 Susan Smith case, NEAT & TIDY takes a new look at desperation.
McCasland draws back the curtain on the Kennedy Family’s Hyannisport compound in 28 MARCHANT AVENUE. Examining five summers in the family’s life, the play focuses on the lobotomy of Rose Marie Kennedy.
Soprano Anna Kirkland stars as soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in DER KANARIENVOGEL (THE CANARY). Long believed to have been a Nazi sympathizer, this play with music explores her connections to the inner sanctums of The Third Reich. Featuring arias by Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Strauss and more, the play takes an inside look at one of Nazi Germany’s untold stories.
Performances will be held at The Clarion Theatre, located at 309 East 26th Street in New York City. A complete press release is attached.
