Natti Shiner, front woman of the Brighton-based 5 piece FICKLE FRIENDS, makes no excuses about the fact that she second-guesses both her and other people’s capacity to feel emotion. “As quite a cynical person I’m often very quick to question both my own and other people’s capacity to feel…emotion…anything and that’s what ‘Cry Baby’ is about really,” she admits. “I watched the John Waters film on New Year’s Day with someone I’d just started hanging out with and the title ‘Cry Baby’ definitely triggered something in me.”

The track’s new video, which premiered today on Nylon, is an artistic extension of those prompted feelings.

“Both the song and video are inspired by the Waters film…aesthetically and musically,” Shiner explains. “It’s pretty cynical and I wanted to create a video that reflected that and the dark twisted and almost uncomfortable elements seen in the Cry Baby film.”

“Cry Baby” originally premiered on Stereogum and Huw Stephens’ BBC Radio 1 show. The song, which was recorded in LA earlier this year with producer Mike Crossey (Foals, The 1975), and supports Fickle Friends’ incandescent indie-pop as a refreshing, summer-ready release. Paste Magazine praised the track as “filled with fun synth beats, bitchin’ bass, catchy lyrics and dazzling vocals,” while Stereogum called it “a bouncy, infectious jam with super groovy bass, playful synth stutters, and slapping drums.”
