“A Musical March Along the Iberian Peninsula”

This multimedia event features renowned castanet virtuoso, Carmen de Vicente, who is celebrated worldwide for her mathematical precision and technical artistry.
(Sarasota, FL) Faith Lutheran Church’s season of “Musical Journeys” concludes its season with “A Musical March Along the Iberian Peninsula,” with Carmen de Vicente on castanets, and Joseph Holt on piano, on March 30, 2014, at 4 p.m. The concert will include works by the Spanish composers, Antonio Soler, Isaac Albeniz, Jeronimo Jimenez, Manuel de Falla, and Enrique Granados, among others. With the Iberian Peninsula, which includes regions in Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and France, as a visual and inspirational backdrop, the event also features an integrated travelogue and multimedia presentation by Dr. Randell Johnson of Randell’s Travels and a post-concert reception with inspired foods from the regions explored, including tapas. “For many people, undertaking a trip to the Iberian Peninsula is an exotic voyage,” says Randall Johnson of Randall’s Travels. “Joe came to us with the idea that we could do some programs this year that would bring this experience to Sarasota. I was delighted to participate.”
A renowned castanet virtuoso, Carmen de Vicente is known for her mathematical precision combined with technical artistry. She began her studies at the age of seven and earned the degree of professor of Spanish dance from the prestigious Royal Superior School of Dramatic Arts and Dance in Madrid, Spain. De Vicente studied and trained with the internationally known Mariemma in her native Spain and made her debut in 1985 at the famed Centro Cultural Villa de Madrid Theater. She has been celebrated around the world as a master castanet player and has made it her passion and dedication to elevate the castanet as a solo concert instrument.To that end, she has performed with numerous orchestras, pianists, and guitarists in both the United States and in Spain.
Dr. Joseph Holt enjoys a wide-ranging career as conductor, pianist, chamber music performer, arts administrator, educator and arranger. In addition to serving as director of music at Faith Lutheran Church, he is also the artistic director for Gloria Musicae, Sarasota’s professional choral ensemble. With the Sarasota Orchestra, Holt has prepared choruses for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, a salute to the Boston Pops, a commemorative program for the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and prepared the “Broadway Bound” concerts. He has appeared as pianist and conductor for the Artist Series Concerts and the Sarasota Orchestra. With June LeBell, he is a co-host for the “Musical Mondays” series of the Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning and also sits on the board of the Sarasota Music Archive. Holt served more than 20 years as principal pianist with the U.S. Army Chorus in Washington, DC, performing for United States presidents, military officials, and dignitaries from around the world.
