Elsie Quirk Library to host speaker for ‘Critical Choices at the End of Life’
SARASOTA COUNTY – Elsie Quirk Public Library will host a special program aimed at helping people face some of life’s biggest challenges.

“Critical Choices at the End of Life” is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 22, at the library, 100 W. Dearborn St., Englewood.
The program will feature Dr. Frank Kavanaugh, former professor at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Topics include:
- The preparation of Florida Advance Health Care Directives
- Discussion with family, loved ones and physicians
- What to do when serious illness strikes
- How to use hospice care if you become terminal
- The hastening of death when all else fails
Kavanaugh will also talk about the right of mentally competent persons who suffer from an irreversible illness and unbearable pain to choose a peaceful and painless death at the time and place of their own choosing.
Kavanaugh is chairman emeritus of the International Academy for Preventative Medicine and vice president of the Cooper Institute for Advanced Studies in Medicine and the Humanities.
