ELC AWARDED $2000 GRANT FROM SERVICE CLUB OF MANATEE COUNTY FOR WAVE FITNESS PROGRAM
Palmetto, Florida, May 4th, 2018 – The Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) has been awarded a $2000 grant from Service Club of Manatee County to support the WAVE fitness program.
Sharon Oakes, ELC Chief Operations Officer, said: “We are extremely grateful to Service Club of Manatee County for this financial support of what is a crucial program as we try to combat the issue of child obesity in our local communities.”
WAVE started in the summer of 2017 as a pilot program. The success was so apparent that the program was then introduced in the school year, which included a 10-week session in the fall, and a 10-week session this spring. Approximately 200 Manatee County students were enrolled for the school year program in Palmetto Elementary, Blackburn Elementary, Kinnan Elementary, and A Readiness Learning Academy 1 & 2.
The Wave program is a prevention-driven, health and wellness program designed to support preschool children in achieving goals for improving long-term health and wellness. WAVE applies the principles of elite sports performance training to improve gross motor skills, flexibility, balance, coordination and strength while encouraging a lifestyle of consistent physical activity and healthy choices.
Preschools receive a block of functional fitness programming for their students twice per week. The 30-45-minute block of training consists of five minutes of dynamic warm-up followed by a rotation through several stations. The stations emphasize one of the five functional fitness areas: flexibility/mobility, strength, speed, agility, and endurance. Additionally, the program includes key components of the 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go & activities that promote healthy eating and nutritional awareness.
