Eisenhower Dance will perform Rite of Spring and other dances on Friday, April 17 at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. |
Rite of Spring was choreographed three years ago as part of a collaboration with the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival to celebrate Igor Stravinsky’s iconic piece. The dance veers from the traditional storyline of a sacrificial virgin and instead tackles the theme of mankind’s struggles throughout the history of the world.
“Years ago I had a choreography mentor tell me I couldn’t choreograph a dance about the history of the world and I thought ‘why not?,'” Eisenhower said.
The program’s world premieres include Danzon by Associate Artistic Director Stephanie Pizzo and Onwardby former Eisenhower dancer Ahmad Simmons. Danzon was inspired by music that was given to Pizzo by a long-time Eisenhower Dance supporter Lee Barthel.
“The music and dancing are spicy and luscious,” Eisenhower said about the new work.
Onward is a driving contemporary work that highlights the virtuosic skills of the Eisenhower dancers. The program will also include Lightplay, a crowd-pleaser from Eisenhower Dance’s newest production, The Light Show.
Eisenhower Dance Center student companies will perform pre-concert show beginning at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for Rite of Spring are $25 and $20 for seniors and students. To order, please call 586-286-2222 or visit www.macombcenter.com.
