The Vikings, a subject that has fascinated people for generations, are explored in-depth via the two programs presented on this release – “Vikings: The Norse Terror” and “Vikings: The Norse Raiders.”
The Viking Age ran from the late-eighth to the mid-eleventh century and describes the period of Scandinavian expansion and exploration that saw them raid, trade and settle in regions from the East Coast of North America to the Black Sea and Constantinople. They are often portrayed as bloodthirsty pirates whose only interest was murder, rape and pillage but, while that was undoubtedly a part of their lives, modern scholarship has shown them to also be superb seafarers and navigators, skillful traders, master craftsmen, dedicated farmers and the creators of magnificent epic sagas of the highest literary quality.
While the Vikings may be long gone, they still cast a shadow over modern times and culture. The 2012 BBC TV series Vikings presented by Neil Oliver, the high profile Vikings exhibition at the British Museum (March to June 2014) and the critically acclaimed TV drama series Vikings, which airs on the History Channel and on Amazon Prime (season one is already a big seller on DVD), are all proof of this.
These two programs explore all aspects of the Vikings, their raiding, their trading, their exploration and their domestic lives to give a fully rounded appreciation of their lives, their culture and their impact on the history of Europe.
