So far this year, GRAMMY-nominated UK duo Disclosure have released three singles that went straight for the jugular in three very different ways – the carnival-infused “ENERGY”, the hip house aural assault of “MyHigh” featuring Aminé and slowthai and the current globally unifying and uplifting soundtrack to the sunshine, “Douha (Mali Mali)” featuring Fatoumata Diawara – all of which showcase the versatility and innovation harnessed by these two young, London based songwriters and producers.
Next up – and with just 36 hours until their third album ENERGY is unleashed to the world – is “Birthday” featuring Kehlani & Syd. Taking the tempo down to a confident yet sultry swagger, “Birthday” digs deeper in an R&B sound that the brother’s brought to the forefront of their repertoire around their second album Caracal and in fact was one of the earliest tracks they completed during the sessions in LA and quickly made the cut for the new album ENERGY. Listen to “Birthday” feat. Kehlani & Syd HERE and look out for the Kid Studio directed video coming Friday.
On the concept of the song, Howard explains: “Syd & I were going through a similar thing at the time, trying to work out if it was cool to call your ex to say hi or is it too awkward / mean to do so out of the blue?”
“It’s the oldest song on the album by far so has definitely stood the test of time and deservedly made the cut” adds Guy. “And the addition of Kehlani just took it to the next level and turned into a fire duet.”
To back the release, Guy & Howard have turned in one of their VIP mixes of the single, which historically have always been unreleased fan favorites when they slip them into DJ sets (see their VIP mix of Jessie Ware’s “Running” back in 2012 that set the ball rolling). Listen to the mix HERE.
Just last week Cercle invited Disclosure to perform a live DJ set from the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. Produced and broadcast by Cercle in partnership with Amazon Music the live stream saw Disclosure play in the unique and magnificent setting of the Croatian National Park. The show aired via Cercle’s Facebook page with impressive live viewing figures and has since clocked up 2M views – watch back HERE. The full set will be available on YouTube tomorrow, August 27.
On ENERGY’s release date, August 28, fans can explore Disclosure’s ‘ENERGY Minecraft Experience,’ an immersive meta-verse within Minecraft inspired by the vibrant world of their new record. With the help of design collective Blockworks alongside Island Records, fans can discover a square mile of rolling hills, roiling streams, and dark caverns, all of which come together in a stunning mosaic to replicate ENERGY’s earthy cover art. Deep in the caves under the land’s surface are three (literally) underground clubs inspired by iconic venues around the world, plus Guy Lawrence’s kitchen as seen in previous live streams. As players explore the realm made up of over 100 million blocks, they’ll have a chance to do some digital crate-digging, hunting for 13 hidden records including 8-bit reworks of some of the duo’s most-loved tracks. Minecraft is one of the world’s most successful computer games with 126 million monthly active players. View the trailer for Disclosure’s ‘ENERGY Minecraft Experience’ HERE.
