New York, NY: November 11, 2016 — Actor Dev Patel visits 92Y with his new film, Lion, on Monday, November 21. Following a 7:15 pm preview screening of the film, Patel joins 92Y Reel Pieces moderator Annette Insdorf for a conversation.
Lion is one of the most anticipated releases of the year, having won the Audience Award at film festivals including Toronto. A boy lost in Calcutta is adopted by a kind couple in Australia (played by Nicole Kidman and David Wenham). As The Hollywood Reporter noted, “A tremendously moving performance from Dev Patel is the resilient soul of Lion, the incredible true story of Saroo Brierley and his tenacious quest to find the family from whom he was separated 25 years earlier.”
Dev Patel is best known for his breakthrough performance in Slumdog Millionaire (2008), as well as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015). Playing Neal Sampat in Aaron Sorkin’s HBO series The Newsroom, he was part of a gifted ensemble cast from 2012-14. He is also the star of The Man Who Knew Infinity — released earlier this year — with Jeremy Irons.
92Y’s Reel Pieces film series with moderator Annette Insdorf celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2017. Insdorf is a Columbia University Film professor and author, and events in her series have included previews of Oscar Best Picture winners Spotlight and Birdman, and conversations with Meryl Streep, Francis Ford Coppola, Bryan Cranston, Kristen Wiig and Woody Allen, among many others.
