Detroit Symphony Orchestra Offers Unprecedented Access to Its Creative Process with Free Live Webcast of Mahler Rehearsal, May 20

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) – continuing its mission to be “the most accessible orchestra on the planet” – will offer unprecedented global access to its creative process by offering a free live webcast of a rehearsal on Wednesday May 20 at 10am EST. Music director Leonard Slatkin and the DSO will be preparing Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 for their weekend concerts May 21-23, and they will let music lovers around the world into the first 15 minutes of the rehearsal (in keeping with American Federation of Musicians broadcast regulations) on May 20, with both conductor and players outfitted with microphones so that viewers can hear not only the music but their dialogue clearly. Slatkin will present a recorded five-minute introduction to this live 15-minute excerpt of the rehearsal. Offering insight into how these artists interpret great music week in and week out, this rehearsal webcast is in the spirit of the DSO’s pioneering Live from Orchestra Hall free weekly performance HD webcast series. Currently in its fifth full season, the series reaches a global audience of some half a million.

Ever since 1922, when it was the first orchestra in the world to present a radio broadcast, the DSO has repeatedly proven itself a leader in technology and accessibility. Using a state-of-the-art robotic camera production system, the DSO launched the groundbreaking Live from Orchestra Hall series in April 2011, becoming the first orchestra in the world to offer a series of free live webcasts for a global audience. Since then, Live from Orchestra Hall has expanded to include mobile viewing via the DSO to Go mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices; and partnerships with the world’s top cultural sites, including PBS.org, France-based Medici.tv, Russia-based Paraclassics.com and UK-based ClassicalTV.com. The recently launched Classroom Edition is an educational extension of Live from Orchestra Hall and reaches more than 50,000 students nationwide.

Now watched in more than 100 countries, the Live from Orchestra Hall webcast series is presented by the Ford Motor Company Fund and made possible by the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
