Dallas Symphony assistant conductor and Juilliard alumna Karina Canellakis leads Juilliard Orchestra’s traditional commencement concert replacing Evan Rogister on Thursday, May 22, 2014 in Alice Tully Hall. Alumnus Evan Rogister has been called to LA Opera to conduct André Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire with soprano Renée Fleming and four additional alumni – Ryan McKinny, Stacey Tappan, Anthony Dean Griffey, and Cullen Gandy. Evan Rogister and Renée Fleming previously performed the work at the Lyric Opera of Chicago with a cast that featured alums Susanna Phillips and Anthony Dean Griffey. Evan Rogister recently appeared with Ms. Fleming and Ms. Phillips at Juilliard’s gala evening, Dreams Come True: A Celebration of Juilliard Music, on April 29, 2014 at Juilliard.
Ms. Canellakis leads the Juilliard Orchestrain the Overture to Wagner’s Tannhäuser; Sibelius’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Minor, Op. 47; and Debussy’s La Mer. Juilliard violinist Hahnsol Kim is soloist. Mr. Kim will graduate with a bachelor of music degree from Juilliard, where he has been studying with Hyo Kang.

The Juilliard Orchestra features the School’s graduating class of instrumentalists and is attended by their family members and friends, many of whom are in New York City for Juilliard’s 109th Commencement Ceremony the following morning, Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11 AM in Alice Tully Hall. The concert and its early 5:30 PM start time are part of a special evening that includes a private dinner hosted by Juilliard for the distinguished recipients of the School’s honorary doctorates to be awarded at the following morning’s ceremony. This year’s honorees include actress Viola Davis, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, architect Frank O. Gehry, composer Philip Glass, choreographer Lar Lubovitch, jazz pianist Marcus Roberts, and philanthropists Bruce and Suzanne F. (Suzie) Kovner, some of whom are also expected to be in attendance at the concert.
Known for its versatility and vitality, the Juilliard Orchestra performs to consistently full houses in almost a dozen New York City appearances each season, and as a strong partner to Juilliard’s operatic and dance performances. Led by esteemed guest conductors and distinguished faculty, the Orchestra performs in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully and Avery Fisher halls, the legendary Carnegie Hall, and the School’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Most orchestral evenings also feature a concerto performance by a Juilliard instrumentalist. Major works for orchestra and voice frequently are programmed as well, and each season one concert is dedicated to selected world-premiere orchestral works submitted by Juilliard composers. The Juilliard Orchestra has toured across the United States, and to Europe, South America, and Asia. The Orchestra was the first Western conservatory ensemble allowed to visit and perform following the opening of the People’s Republic of China in 1987, returning two decades later, in 2008. The Juilliard Orchestra has recorded concertos with violinist Itzhak Perlman, and has made several recordings of works by American composers with such conductors as Lukas Foss, Gerard Schwarz, and Leonard Slatkin.
The 2013-14 season saw the first appearances of Hans Graf and Vladimir Jurowski with the Orchestra, and return appearances by Anne Manson, Nicholas McGegan, Jeffrey Milarsky, Matthias Pintscher, and Larry Rachleff. Other guest conductors during the 2012-13 season included Semyon Bychkov, Jeffrey Kahane, and alumnus
Leonard Slatkin. The 2013-14 season also included collaborations with James Levine in a Met Opera/Juilliard Concert of Comic Operas, Emmanuel Villlaume in Massenet’s Cendrillon, and Matthew Aucoin conducting Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Highlights of the 2012-2013 season included Alan Gilbert conducting the Met Opera/Juilliard co-production of Così fan tutte, faculty member Itzhak Perlman conducting the Orchestra for the first time, and alumna Marin Alsop in a concert celebrating American composer and Juilliard faculty member John Corigliano’s 75th birthday at Carnegie Hall.
About Karina Canellakis
Recently appointed assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony, Karina Canellakis is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the most promising and exciting young American conductors. She made her Carnegie Hall conducting debut in Zankel Hall, and frequently appears as guest conductor of New York’s groundbreaking International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). This coming season, she makes her debut with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Colorado and Toledo symphonies, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. She has been invited to be a Conducting Fellow at the Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Music Center for summer 2014.
Ms. Canellakis was a selected conductor in the Lucerne Festival Master Class with Bernard Haitink, and conducted the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra in Japan, as well as the Tonhalle Orchestra in Switzerland as part of international master classes. She is the winner of the 2013 Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship, founded by Marin Alsop.
Karina Canellakis holds a bachelor’s degree in violin from the Curtis Institute of Music and a master of music degree in orchestral conducting from The Juilliard School. Her prominent mentors are Alan Gilbert, Fabio Luisi, and Sir Simon Rattle.
As a violinist, Ms. Canellakis appears as soloist and chamber musician across the United States. For several years, she played on a regular basis in both the Berlin Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony. She has also been on several occasions guest concertmaster of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway, and spent many summers at the Marlboro Music Festival.
About Hahnsol Kim
Born in New York, violinist Hahnsol Kim began his studies at five years old. He studied with Hyun Mi Kim at the Yewon School in Korea where he graduated in 2008 and Seoul Arts High School, where he graduated in 2011. Mr. Kim won first prize at the Osaka International Music Competition in 2007, sixth prize at the International Violin Competition Sion Valais in 2009, and third prize at the Dong-A Music Competition in 2010. He has performed at Seoul Arts Center, Mendelssohn Haus in Germany, and at Carnegie Hall. In December 2013, Mr. Kim won the DreamArts Showcase, a young artist competition. As prizewinner, he will perform in the concert series produced by Community Performing Arts in Florida in January 2015. Mr. Kim will graduate with a bachelor of music degree from Juilliard, where he is studying with Hyo Kang.
