Creative Cauldron’s 2016-17 Performance Season

Ruthless! The Musical (October 6 – October 30, 2016)

Book & Lyrics by Joel Paley

An Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Award-winner, Ruthless! Is a campy cult favorite that famously spoofs Broadway hits like Gypsy and Mame as well as classic films like The Bad Seed and All About Eve. Ruthless! Is a hilarious romp through the world of Broadway, child acting, parenthood and unbridled ambition.

Oliver Twist (November 4 – 20, 2016)

A Learning Theater Production

Adapted and Directed by Laura Connors Hull, Music by Matt Conner

Told through the lens of a contemporary graphic novel, the Learning Theater Ensemble revisits our 2012 original adaptation of this classic Dickins tale, shedding new light on a story that has captured the imaginations and pierced the hearts of audiences for over two centuries.

A Christmas Carol Memory (December 1 – 20, 2016)

A World Premiere, adapted from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Conceived and Directed by Laura Connors Hull, Book by Jennifer Clements

A young orphan girl being raised by a warm but eccentric aunt is spending a tender first Christmas without her parents. While searching the attic for ornaments to decorate her aunt’s tree, she discovers a theatrical trunk once used by her puppeteer grandfather. When the extended family gathers on Christmas Eve, the contents in the trunk reawaken memories and spur the renewal of a long-forgotten family tradition – the reenactment of Dickins’ A Christmas Carol.

Blues in the Night (February 9 – March 5, 2017)

Conceived and Originally Directed by Sheldon Epps

Blues in the Night, a scorching, Tony-nominated musical captures the soul of the blues. Featuring twenty-six numbers that tell of the sweet, sexy and sorrowful experiences three women have with the lying, cheating, snake of a man who does them wrong. The interweaving stories are defined through glorious songs made famous by Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Jimmy Cox, Ida Cox and more.

The Emperor’s New Clothes (March 17 – April 9, 2017)

A Learning Theater Production

Conceived and Directed by Laura Connors Hull, Music by Matt Conner

The emperor has hired some crafty weavers to create the most fabulous robe of all, but when they tell him the robe is invisible to those who are “hopelessly witless” will the emperor admit he sees nothing at all? The Learning Theater Ensemble tackles Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale with a fresh, musical spin that hilariously illuminates how pride and vanity can make a leader a glorious buffoon.

Kaleidoscope (May 4 – 28, 2017)

A Bold New Works World Premiere

Music and Lyrics by Matt Conner, Book and Lyrics by Stephen Gregory Smith

The latest Bold New Work from the creative team behind the critically acclaimed The Turn of the Screw and Monsters of the Villa Diodati. During the run of a legendary Broadway performer’s comeback one-woman show, the performances take unexpected turns as she tries to tell the story of her star-studded life in the theatre. She frequently forgets anecdotes she was supposed to tell, or makes up entirely new ones. Her stage manager and director try to come to her aid, but the insidious signs of Alzheimer’s disease are becoming apparent. Brimming with humor and pathos, this heart-warming production twists and turns its way through the shadows of memory.
