Circus Summer Camp is in full swing at the Sailor Circus Arena in Sarasota, Florida. Youthful campers arrive Mondays through Fridays at 9:00 am for group acts and one-on-one training that lasts well into the afternoon. Students and counselors put in many hours of hard work during the one- and two-week sessions, which include big dreams, plenty of giggles and laughs, and lots of sweat.
Yes, summertime in Sarasota is hot, and learning to juggle, flip and fly burns a lot of energy, but everyone gets a chance to cool off during water days where sunscreen, towels and bathing suits are the costume of choice. Two-week sessions also included a trip to the Ringling Museum where campers were treated to the Summer Circus Spectacular at the Historic Asolo Theater and a tour of the Circus Museum and Tibbals Learning Center. Best of all, circus camp builds the children’s self-confidence, agility and camaraderie, and every session culminates in a showcase performance for family and friends.

CAC Brings Smiles and Joy To Local Seniors
Ten top students from Sailor Circus Academy recently joined teaching artists Karen Bell and Robin Eurich to bring Humor Therapy to local senior adults. The CAC troupe made several joy-filled visits during the month of June thanks to funding provided by the J. Milton and Nellie E. Hoffa Memorial Foundation.
“For the third year in a row, it has been our pleasure to lead an ensemble of Sailor Circus students into senior nursing facilities and bring joy to those who cannot venture out,” Bell said.
The students trained with Circus Sarasota coaches to develop a performance specifically for senior adults. Discussed in rehearsal were the importance in understanding the experiences of how and when seniors grew up, as well as the differences in their tastes in music and humor. To this end, Karen Bell and Robin Eurich taught the troupe how to engage seniors through performance as well as one-on-one interactions, and they prepared the students for what they would see and experience in a nursing home. “The students gained more experience as performers but, more importantly, they learned to respect and empathize with the seniors,” said Bell.
Senior audiences enjoyed a fast-paced program of music, plate spinning, juggling, clown gags, a western jamboree, and a modern rendition of the classic Abbott and Costello routine “Who’s on First.” The experience was viewed by clients at the Friendship Centers, Pines of Sarasota and Brookdale Communities of Bradenton Gardens, Deer Creek, Mid-Town and Horizon Bay.
Led by Bell and Eurich, the ensemble included Sailor Circus graduate Josiah Bichler and current students Jeannine Castro, Bryce Griggs, Colin Leonard, Ethan Lubow, Sam Molyneaux, Walter Nord and Christopher Tocher; along with Production Manager and student, Owen Leonard; and Stage Manager and graduate, Starlyn Delpero. “The students did an amazing job,” said Eurich, “Their joy and enthusiasm came shining through at every performance.”
Debbie Morrill, who is Manager of Adult Day Services at Friendship Centers, said, “Thank you SO much for bringing the talented and energetic ensemble to entertain our clients. They truly enjoyed it, as did the staff!”
