Renowned musician Canadian virtuoso clarinetist Julian Milkis and the Russian ensemble Siberian Virtuosi perform together in their collaboration, bringing an international flavor to the program “From Baroque to Jazz Classics” on October 25, 2016 as part of their American tour with other performances on the East Coast, and Midwest. Vibrant, colorful and mood-filled works from the baroque to classical and jazz genres by such masters as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Pablo Sarasate, Franz Schubert, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Gioacchino Rossini, to Antonio Bazzini, George Gershwin, and modern composers including Aram Khachaturian, Astor Piazzolla, Alexey Shor, and Benny Goodman among others are arranged for solo and ensemble performances.

One of today’s leading clarinetists, and the only student of clarinet icon Benny Goodman, Juilliard trained artist Julian Milkis has garnered an international reputation as a soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, and jazz clarinetist. He has performed worldwide, appearing on such prominent stages as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Salle Pleyel and Salle Gaveau in Paris, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Roy Thomson Hall and Weston Recital Hall in Toronto, and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, to name a few. His numerous solo appearances include such esteemed orchestras as the Toronto Symphony, State Symphony Orchestra of Russia, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Novosibirsk Philharmonic, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Vivaldi Chamber Orchestra, Hamburg Mozarteum, Edmonton Symphony, L’Orchestre Nationale de Lyon, L’Orchestre Symphonique Francaise, CBC Vancouver Orchestra, Hermitage Chamber Orchestra and Musica Viva, among others.

Celebrating 22 years this season, the Russian ensemble Siberian Virtuosi (the State Ensemble of the Republic of Yakutia) has performed in 14 European and Asian countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Italy, Germany, Israel, China and South Korea. Since its founding in 1994, the Ensemble has given over 1,300 concerts. Comprising 11 violinists and one pianist, this is the Ensemble’s third North American tour, following their successful Carnegie Hall appearance in December 2015, and a recent 6-country tour to South America in the fall of 2014.

Siberian Virtuosi
Siberian Virtuosi, the State Ensemble of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is an Ensemble of 11 violinists and a pianist, which is gaining an increasing popularity in Russia and around the world. Founded in 1994 as the Virtuosi of Yakutia, the Ensemble has given over 2000 concerts during the last 22 years. Ensemble is known for their energy, unique arrangements, and level of their virtuosity.
The Ensemble is also a winner of numerous international awards, including an International Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, “Music Week of Tours” in France, Grand Prix in Cremona, Italy, Grand Prix in Hungary, and many others. They are often tour around the Russian Federation giving performances to full capacity audiences in major cities of the country. Their 20-concert American debut in 2012 was followed by sell out concerts in 6 South American countries, including Brazil, Argentine, Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia.
The Siberian Virtuosi make frequent appearances on the radio and television stations across the Russian Federation. They are led by the Honored art worker of Russian Federation, Honored artist of the Republic of Sakha (Yakoutia), Professor Larisa Gabysheva, and Honored Art Worker of Russian Federation, and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Professor Stanislav Afanasenko. For their cultural and artistic achievements in Russia and abroad, as well as for representing the State of Siberia, the Ensemble “Siberian Virtuosi” was rewarded with the highest honor of the State – the name of the State Ensemble of Violinists of the Republic of Yakutia.

With a unique, branded sound, a virtuosic technical ease and a musical imagination that has captivated critics and audiences alike around the world, Julian Milkis carries the rare honor of being the only student of the clarinet legend Benny Goodman, as well as the title of the “King of Crossover”. Mr. Milkis’ unique interpretations and artistry have earned him an international stature of a dazzling soloist, chamber musician, recitalist and jazz clarinetist, with performances at principal venues of virtually every continent, including the Far East, Europe and the Americas.
His orchestral appearances with the Toronto Symphony, CBC Vancouver Orchestra, State Symphony Orchestra of Russia, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, L’Orchestre Nationale de Lyon, L’Orchestre Colonne, L’Orchestre Symphonique Francaise, KBS Symphony of Seoul, Korea are only some of the symphony orchestras that featured Julian Milkis as their soloist on some of the world’s most prominent stages in New York’s Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Salle Pleyel, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Great Halls of the Moscow Conservatory, and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic of Russia, Roy Thomson Hall and Weston Recital Hall in Toronto, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and others.
Aside from being an established solo artist, Julian Milkis is a sought-after chamber musician, having collaborated with some of today’s leading artists including Yuri Bashmet, Misha Maisky, the Borodin String Quartet and the St. Lawrence String Quartet, to name a few. A multifaceted musician, Mr. Milkis is one of the leading voices for his instrument in the field of Jazz. His treasured collaboration with the jazz pianist Dick Hyman – Benny Goodman’s old bandmate, who has transcribed a number of King of Swing’s classics for Julian, and recently dedicated Ragtime Concerto for him – provides a rare and genuine insight into the golden era of Jazz.
With an extensive amount of music written for him, including a number of concertos, Julian Milkis has had the honor of working with iconic music personalities, such as Giya Kancheli and Olivier Messiaen. Mr. Milkis has recorded for Warner Classics’ Lontano, the French Suonie Colori, Sony’s Russian division CEAUX, and Russian Melodiya and Russian Season.
Julian Milkis performs exclusively on Yamaha Clarinets and Rico reeds. His busy performing schedule during the next few seasons will feature concert tours with the Virtuosi of La Scala in Europe and Middle East, Soloists of Russia, the Borodin String Quartet, and others.
One of the highlights in Julian’s schedule in the next seasons will be his recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, and “Night Prayers” by Giya Kancheli with the Virtuosi of La Scala, appearances with the Siberian Virtuosi in Boston’s John Hancock Hall, and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, as well as performances at European and American Summer Festivals.
