Carlos dos Santos, Jr., Master Contemporary Choreographer to Guest Teach at Florida’s Sarasota Cuban Ballet School Summer Intensive 2014
SARASOTA, Fla., April 16, 2014 — The Sarasota Cuban Ballet School, in partnership with the Dr. Suzanne Kesten Mentoring Project, announces Carlos dos Santos, Jr., resident contemporary choreographer of the Youth American Grand Prix, will teach master contemporary classes for the final week of its Intermediate and Advanced Ballet Summer program. The full program will run six weeks, from June 23 through August 1.
“We are beyond thrilled to have Carlos, one of the country’s most sought after contemporary artists and teachers, to be an integral part of our summer program,” said Ariel Serrano, co-founder of the Sarasota Cuban Ballet School. “Between having Carlos as our guest contemporary dance instructor, and the legendary Ramona de Saa for our classical ballet master teacher, our Summer Intensive is going to be a tour de force.”
“I’m pleased to be part of such a terrific program that combines great classical Cuban ballet training and solid contemporary dance instruction to give students a world class summer dance experience,” said dos Santos.
Dos Santos’ involvement was made possible by underwriting from the Dr. Suzanne Kesten Mentoring Project. Kesten has been providing educational support since 1993, most recently in dance arts.
“This adds a fantastic layer to the Summer Intensive program,” said Kesten. “Incorporating contemporary with classical ballet is critical for any serious dance program and it’s particularly important for the students who are interested in contemporary dance. These two dance divisions are synergistic. They belong together, and no one does contemporary better than Carlos dos Santos.”
Dos Santos is a recognized dancer, choreographer and teacher who has performed with major Brazilian and U.S. companies, including the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, Complexions, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Grupo Salto, Bale Folclorico da Bahia, Bale Teatro Castro Alves and DanceBrazil, where he also served as a rehearsal director.
Dos Santos’ choreographic credits include works for Colorado Ballet, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Dance Festival, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance and DanceBrazil, as well as his own solo performances around the world.
